Desjardins Available In An ‘Emergency’
BUFFALO— The Buffalo Sabres approached the Stanley Cup playoffs in the same condition they were in through most of the regular season—with just a few injuries but to key personnel. Right winger Danny Gare, a 50-goal scorer last season, was sidelined indefinitely, perhaps until next season. Gare has been in and out of the lineup throughout the campaign because of a back injury suffered during Team Canada training camp. He played in only 35 games and never was in top shape. Never was he in the lineup for more than four consecutive games and his goal total was 11. The peppery right winger has been examined time and again by different physicians and the cause of his trouble cannot be determined. Goaltender Gerry Desjardins was back practicing with the club after his latestexamination at the…

Capitals’ Fans Cherish Four-Game Win Streak
WASHINGTON— Four in a row. That may not seem like a lot to a pro bowler, a skeet shooter or the Montreal Canadiens. Then, in early November they followed a victorious hosting of the North Stars with a conking of the Canucks. Two straight! Moreover, they journeyed to New York and, playing for the third time in four nights, outscored the Rangers. It stopped there, though, the Caps squandering a 2-0 lead over Chicago in the following game. Late in January the Caps improved that by half a game, so to speak, beating the Blues twice around a triumph over Detroit. The…
Islanders, Kings, Leafs, Sabres Win As Expected In Playoff Start
MONTREAL— The National Hockey League moved towards its first serious playoff test with the opening of the Stanley Cup quarterfinals on four fronts. But to make it to the quarter-finals, four of the eight teams had to wade through a preliminary round and as expected, all four best-of-three series pretty well ran true to form. Possibly the closest thing to an upset occurred when the Toronto Maple Leafs lost their only home ice start and went on to take two from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Pittsburgh ice to win their series 2-1 in games. But aside from the Leafs’ stumbling slightly, everything else went as expected. The New York Islanders swept the Chicago Black Hawks 5-2 and 2-1, Buffalo Sabres also swept past Minnesota 4-2 and 7-1 and Los Angeles Kings had to go the…
