McCourt Could Be Top Draft Choice
LONDON— When it comes to pro draft prospects in the Ontario Hockey Association Major Junior “A” league, one man stands head and shoulders above the rest. Dale McCourt, captain of the defending Memorial Cup champion St. Catharines Fincups, is generally regarded as the best pro prospect in either of the three major junior hockey leagues in Canada. The five-foot-11, 180-pound center won the most valuable player award at the world junior championships in Czechoslovakia during the Christmas break and is undoubtedly the heart and soul of the Fincups. Some scouts say his only downfall is skating but what he lacks in natural talent, which isn’t much, is easily made up for by his drive and determination. NHLS… Player of the Week
The New York Islanders are heading into the NHLs playoff season with a full head of steam and much of their spark has been provided Jiy the team’s old stand bys—Jude Drouin, Jean-Paul Parise and Denis Potvin. Potvin came on strong last week to record an eight-point performance, which isn’t bad for a defenseman. Potvin posted his 25th goal of the year and raised his season totals to 77 points, by far the best among the Islanders. Potvin also leads all NHL defensemen in the matter of goal scoring and while he’s well off the league standard of 46 goals scored by BobbyOrr for one season, he is certain to finish up close to his personal season high of 31 set last vear. With one week remaining on the NHL schedule Potvin…
Sabres Still Contender Despite Bad Luck Streak
BUFFALO— The Buffalo Sabres lost sole leadership of the National Hockey League’s Adams Division on their last regular season visit to Boston Garden but the wonder was that the club was challenging at all for a division title after all the misfortunes it had suffered since the season’s start. The Bruins tied the Sabres for first place in the Adams Division by beating the Buffalo club, 4-2, in a rough, old-fashioned game in Boston. The Sabres finished the game with only three regular defensemen—Jim Schoenfeld. Bill Hajt, and Jocelyn Guevremont—plus a rookie hastily called up from Hershey of the American League, Ken Breitenbach. Lee Fogolin suffered a separated left shoulder in the second period of the game and was taken to a Boston hospital. His injury was the latest in a long series…
