The WIHL Scene

KIMBERLEY— In a race that went down to the final weekend, the Kimberley Dynamiters won the Western International League championship, their first such title since the 1964-65 season. Cranbrook finished in second place three points short of a second-straight championship. Spokane, the defending Allan Cup champion, finished third for the second straight season, ahead of Nelson and Trail. The top four teams will enter the British Columbia semifinals leading to the Savage Cup. Kimberley will play Nelson in one semifinal while Cranbrook and Spokane play in the other best-of-seven series. While the race for first and second was tight, so was the struggle for third and fourth. Spokane defeated Nelson 5-4 in overtime, coming back from a 4-1 deficit in the third period, to clinch third. That was Nelson’s final game of the league schedule.…

WHA’S… Player of the Week

Speedy Real Cloutier of the Quebec Nordiques appears intent on finishing the WHA season as the individual scoring champion despite the efforts of the Winnipeg’s Anders Hedberg to overtake him. Cloutier continued his sizzling scoring pace this past week as he scored five times to become the league’s second 60-goal scorer while adding a few more points to his league lead over Hedberg. The Nords’ hot right winger has 125 scoring points in 67 games and leads Hedberg by 13. Hedberg, who has played seven less games than Cloutier, is the WHA’s No. 1 goal scorer with 63 but the way Cloutier has been popping them, he may relinquish his lead to the Quebecer in the remaining two weeks of the schedule.
