Defencemen must always remember their job is to help the goalie before the puck Is shot at the net. If a defenceman can't prevent a shot, he must keep out of the way so the goaltender can see It coming. Draw an Imaginary square on the ice with the forward corners touching the faceoff circles and the back corners at the red line beside the goal. If you're defending against an attack in close, stay out of the square. If you're standing inside it you're too close and will block the goalie's view of the play.…


Wings Juggle Out Of Desperation
DETROIT- Where do the Red Wings go from here? Out of sheer desperation, the Red Wings started juggling bodies as they ushered in the new year with a sorry string of performances. Still, the losses and despair continued to pile up. The problem is simple, and one that general manager and coach Alex Delvecchio feared. Even though they were blessed with an easy schedule through the month of January, the Wings responded by playing their worst hockey in years. Seeking a solution, Delvecchio promoted four first-year pros from Kalamazoo of the International Hockey League. The kids were willing, but their experience just didn't let them compete successfully in the National Hockey League. UNH's Holt Looks Cautiously Ahead; Lowly Penn Putting It All Together
DURHAM- The University of New Hampshire strung together three straight victories to take over sole possession of first place in ECAC Division One during the first week of January. But coach Charlie Holt, while enjoying his team's lofty stature, was more cautious than your ordinary first place mentor. “We'll get our come-uppance later on,” he smiled after his charges had defeated Boston College 7-4, despite being outshot 43-27. “Our schedule has us on the road for 10 of our last 13 games.
