NEW YORK— The wires hummed with the news. Gilles Marotte, the New York Rangers' veteran defensemen, had been picked up on waivers by the St. Louis Blues. Marotte, 31, hadn't dressed in the Rangers' early games—and appeared to be in danger of being sent to the minors, as had already happened with another Ranger vet, defenseman Doug Jarrett. “Insiders tell me that Marotte was picked up on a waiver price of $2,500, instead of the usual $30,000,” said one NHL general manager. “That happens when a veteran player with a big salary is in danger.
