Defenseman Turns Goalie And Wins

MONTREAL- Coach Denis DeJordy couldn’t believe his eyes. Neither could owner Johnny-Rougeau nor the thousands of fans who jacked the Laval Sports Center, home of the Laval Nationals of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. A free-for-all, so common in junior hockey today, broke out in the second period of a game between the Nationals and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. When the dust had cleared, referee Pierre Gibeau had dished out 154 minutes in penalties, including 10 game misconducts. Also lost, because of the fights, were both Laval netminders, who were ejected for the rest of the game “I’d never heard of anything like that before in my life,” said Rougeau, a former local wrestling hero who came back as owner of the team this year. “Here we were with no goalie and still half…

Rookie Pays Expenses To Make Toledo

TOLEDO— The Toledo Goaldiggers training camp is open by invitation only. Players from last year’s club, draft choices, scouting reports and those sent in by the major league affiliates are normally the only players receiving invitations. But Toledo manager-coach Ted Garvin has made an exception. Garvin, whose colorful antics and often controversial nature have helped make Toledo one of the top franchises in the International Hockey League, has sent an invitation to a player whose home base is 1,600 miles from Toledo. Recently, Garvin received a call from Larry Kotyk, a 22-year-old defenseman, from Saskatoon, Sask. “I’ll pay my own way,” Kotyk said. “I’ll pay my own plane fare, my own hotel bill, my own meal money. I just want to prove I can make your hockey team,” the youngster told Garvin. Responding to…

Ex-Big Leaguer MacGregor Joins Beauce

SPECIAL TO HOCKEY NEWS LEWISTON— The North American Hockey League is rapidly approaching its 1976-77 season opener and most all of the eight league teams will have an abundance of new faces. Two former major league performers, Bruce MacGregor of the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association and Norm Gratton of the Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League have become playing members of the NAHL. MacGregor, who has spent the last 16 years touring the NHL with Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers before joining the Oilers for the last two years, has been assigned to Beauce Jaros by the Edmonton club after they secured complete waivers on the 35-year-old right winger. MacGregor left the NHL after scoring 213 career goals and should prove a valuable addition to the Jaros. The…
