Thomas’ Extraordinary Goaltending Guided Leafs To Shot At Flyers

TORONTO— The challenge to the Toronto Maple Leafs in their best-of—three Stanley Cup playoff preliminary round against the Pittsburgh Penguins was clear Leafs had to control the Penguins’ prolific offense or face quick elimination. Well, the Leafs, who were outscored. 32-18 by the Penguins in five regular season meetings during the National Hockey League schedule did more than control it. They choked off the Penguin attack completely in taking the series in three games. Backed by the extraordinary goaltending of Wayne Thomas, the Leafs allowed the Penguins only two goals plus one empty-nettally. The Leafs won the first game, 4-1, at Maple Leaf Gardens, dropped a 2-0 decision at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena, then advanced to the quarter-final against the Philadelphia Flyers with a convincing 4-0 victory in the third game at Toronto. The Great Mystery Call PERHAPS THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE should call in James Bond or Kojak or Beretta to solve the great telephone call mystery. Maybe John D.McDonald could write a mystery novel about it and a movie could be filmed of the book starring Robert Redford as Lloyd Gilmour, the referee, and Mickey Rooney as referee-in-chief Scotty Morrison. Anyway, what happened in Detroit that evening in April is the finest NHL caper in years. The situation was this. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings were playing at the Detroit Olympia in a rough game which degenerated into a sickening brawl early in the second period.
