Mariners Surprise Roadrunners Winning Series On Phoenix Ice
PHOENIX— It started out as a ‘homer’ series but the dramatic ending wasn’t quite what the Phoenix Roadrunners expected. The Runners blew their best-of-five West Division semi-final series to the San Diego Mariners when the home ice advantage ran out in game five after each had won twice in their respective rinks. The Mariners won the deciding fifth game 2-1 after Phoenix had won game one 3-2 and game three 6-4 at home. San Diego took the second game 4-2 and the fourth 5-1 at the Sports Arena. The Roadrunners were supposed to follow form and win the fifth game in Phoenix and go on to meet the Houston Aeros in the best-of-seven divisional final. Instead the Mariners moved on and the Runners were sent packing for another disappointing year. An ironic twist to…
Detroit May Get Muscle, New Coach
DETROIT— The Detroit Red Wings will be a more aggressive hockey club next year, says owner Bruce Norris anc the team could possibly have a new bench boss as well. It was his feeling that the Wings had better talent than their record showed and he had hoped for a better finish in the Norris Division race. The Wings ended fourth behind Montreal, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. Norris said he wants the Wings to ice a more aggressive hockey club next season. He added that he was particularly angry with the Detroit team when they beat Philadelphia one night and lost to…

MONTREAL— Coming off his greatest season, Peter Mahovlich has finally made the conversion to center, become perhaps the natural heir-apparent to Henri Richard as leader of the Canadiens, and, most importantly perhaps to him, escaped the shadow of his older brother Frank. In 1974-75, Peter Mahovlich finally established himself as the superstar the Canadiens had long thought he would and should be They fired home 35 goals and collected a staggering 82 assists for 117 points. The point total would have been a Canadian club record under normal circumstances except that Guy Lafleur flicked home 53 goals and finished with 119 points last season. But it was the development of Peter Mahovlich which may well have helped make Lafleur as well. Lafleur became only the third man in the long history of the…
