Lee, Green Capture Top OHA Awards; Tempers Flare Early In Playoff Action

OTTAWA Peter Lee has become the 33rd winner of the Albert (Red) Tilson Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the outstanding player in the Ontario Hockey Association Major-Junior A League. The 20-year-old right winger and captain of the Ottawa 67s won by a healthy margin of votes on a ballot taken among the league’s newspaper and radio reporters. One other award was announced. London defenseman Rick Green won the Max Kaminsky Memorial Trophy as outstanding defenseman in the 1975-76 season. Until this season the Tilson trophy, which was presented to the league by the Toronto Globe and Mail for the player best combining outstanding play with gentlemanly conduct. Royals, Juniors Series Highlights Quarter-Finals As Violence Threatens To Make Playoffs Bloodbath

MONTREAL— The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League quarter-finals are going to take a lot longer to complete than anyone expected. Hopefully they’ll be up before someone gets killed. The competition on the scoreboard has been exciting with the pre-playoff underdogs winning five of the dozen completed games thus far. Yet the violence which has accompanied the first playoff set overshadows the excellent play and threatens to turn the postseason action into a bloodbath. First, the good news. Of the four quarter-final series the Montreal-Cornwall matchup has proved to be the most exciting and the cleanest. The Juniors were definite underdogs, having finished third behind Cornwall in the West Division, but upset the Royals on their own ice, 4-2, to take all-important home-ice advantage away from Cornwall. Captain Normand Dupont was the big shooter for the…

JUNIOR JOTTINGS

Manitoba League Gregg Drinnan, statistician for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League tells us that Ken Krentz, who won the MJHL scoring title, was rookie-of-the-year last season. Jim Misener, runner-up to Krentz this year, won the point derby last season. MJHL is well into playoffs now. In the South Division, West Kildonan North Stars ousted Assiniboine Park Monarchs in five; and St. James Canadians, who finished third, surprised by ousting the second place Saints in five. In the North, Brandon got by Portage Terriers in five and defending league champion Selkirk Steelers disposed of Dauphin Kings, also in five. At present, Selkirk leads Brandon 3-1 in the North final and, in the South, St. James and West Kildonan are 1-1. Drinnan says it would definitely appear that Selkirk, the Centennial Cup champions two years…

Pronovost Says NHL Cup Winner Would Surpass 50-Goal Feat

PITTSBURGH — Mark it down. March 24, 1976. A momentous date in the history of the Pittsburgh Penguins. At 11:01 of the third period that night in a game against the Boston Bruins, Jean Pronovost delivered his 50th goal, an achievement matched by only 13 other National Hockey League players. “It went pretty quick.” the 30-year-old right winger said of his milestone, once he came within striking distance of it. Certainly, Pronovost rushed to reach 50 without any gnawing stretches that can leave an entire club on edge. After a three-game scoreless streak earlier in the month, he knocked home five in six games before connecting against Boston and running his consecutive scoring string to six. For Pronovost, the ultimate goal is to be a member of a Stanley Cup team, so thathe is able…
