Flames Struggling, Not Grovelling, For Playoff Spot

ATLANTA— While Cliff Fletcher was calling 1976 “a transition year” for the Atlanta Flames, his team was trying to attain a playoff berth by means other than backing in. The Flames, one of the NHL’s strongest clubs in December, did a back-flip in mid-January, and it wasn’t until March that they showed any sign of coming out of the slump. After his club turned in a stretch of 4-14-4 hockey, Atlanta coach Fred Creighton was in understandably ill humor. Following a 3-2 loss to Detroit in The Omni on March 3, Creighton berated his players so loudly that he could be heard on the other side of the concrete wall. The next day, he angrily took issue with a newspaper reference to his team and the New York Rangers as “groveling” for a play-off…

The WIHL Scene

SPOKANE— The Man works in mysterious ways. Especially when he casts his eyes upon the Western International League. This has not been what veteran observers would consider an average winter in the WIHL, not with the year-long musical chairs battles for playoff positions. Jim Stanfield’s incredible six-goal game and subsequent departure from Spokane for the pros, the perennial champion Flyers’ shocking fall, and Trail’s equally stunning rise to the top. Now the league’s scoring race has come down to an air-tight three way struggle between a trio of performers from the league’s two worst offensive clubs (Kimberley’s Dave Lee and Dennis Schick and Ted Hargreaves of Nelson), defenseman-of-the-year honors may go to a blueliner on the loop’s most generous defensive squad (Rick Williams of Nelson), and the next most generous six (Kimberley)may end…

Controversy Surrounds College Playoff System

TORONTO— University of Toronto Blues have added fuel to the controversy surrounding the 1976 Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union hockey championships. The Blues qualified for the national championships not because they were the top team in their division, but rather on account of the fact they were the host club. They were specified as one of the teams competing in order to assure gate receipts from the event. As it turned out the Blues were inhospitable hosts as they downed the Guelph Gryphons 7-2 in the final game to capture the national title for the eighth time in 11 seasons. The format under which the championships were played also drew criticism, especially from the teams involved. A pair of games were played on the first day of the tournament Friday with the winners playing the…
