Fogolin Gets Regular Shift As Blueline Corps Depleted
BUFFALO— When the Buffalo Sabres traded Larry Carriere to the Atlanta Flames before the season began, little did Punch Imlach think his defense corps would one day be down to two veterans. That’s what happened during a tough stretch in February. Jim Schoenfeld, team captain and one of the team’s enforcers had been sidelined since December by mononucleosis when his backline mate, Jerry Korab, was shelved by hemorrhaging from a broken nose. Korab’s nose was broken for the fifth time when he was hit by the puck in a game against Detroit. He continued to play for about a week but the nose continued to bleed intermittently. Then, when the Sabres were in Chicago for a game against the Black Hawks, the big guy they call King Kong began to hemorrhage and was rushed to…
Late Comebacks Help Salvage Points
LOS ANGELES— As inconsistent as they have been through the first three-fourths of this season, an interesting development in the case of the Kings has been their ability to come back from deficits in the last several weeks. Clearly, this is a club with a lot of character. A 42-17-21 team at the end of last season, they reached the three-quarter mark of that campaign at 33-11-16, compared to 3025-5 this season, a drop-off of a fat 20 points. Following opening quarters of 12-6-2 and 9-11-0, they were 9-8-3 through the last 20 games. They have been less that a .500 team for three months now. It has not been a bad season, but it has not been as good as anticipated. It has been a more difficult coaching campaign for Bob Pulford.…
Bruins’ Goaler Does It Again For U.S. Secretary
BOSTON— Gerry Cheevers and Henry Kissinger—two ships passing in the night. The first time their paths crossed was back in the final game of the 1972 Stanley Cup playoffs when Cheevers and the Bruins shut the Rangers out in Madison Square Garden, 3-0, to wrap up their second Cup in three years as the Secretary of State watched from the loge. That proved to be Cheevers’ au revoir with the Bruins, who lost him to the WHA’s Cleveland Crusaders less than a month later. Three and a half checkered years later, after severing his WHA ties once and for all with the Crusaders, there was Cheevers back in the Bruins’ net against the Red Wings at Boston Garden. And who was perched at rink side in a box seat with his son and Bruins’ president…
