Bucyk Amazing Scorer In 19th Bruin Season
BOSTON— Hail to The Chief. As the Bruins, faced with the imminent return of Bobby Orr and further bolstered by the return of prodigal son Gerry Cheevers, begin to zero in on the Stanley Cup, leave us pause for moment to contemplate Johnny Bucyk. The big Bruin left winger, in his 41st year (birthday in May), began this season as the sixth-highest scorer in NHL history. He has since jumped over some pretty fair players, among them Norm Ullman. Stan Mikita and Alex Delvecchio, and now sits in the second spot in total points—behind Gordie Howe. Bucyk also reached the 500-goal plateau this season, which is his 21st in the NHL and his 19th as a Bruin. Howe, of course, is the top man with 1,809 points in 1,687 games. Big John, as this is…

Hockey Ad Lib
What Makes Wren Run… GUYS LIKE WREN BLAIR are the guts of this game of hockey. They live for this sport. Without it, they would wither away. They believe they know it better than anyone else. They spend every waking hour every winter trying to out-maneuver the next guy. Insult them and they shrug it off. Cry for them and they laugh at you. Knock them down and they bounce right back up. As Blair says, “We’re in a jungle and we’ll do everything and anything, we’ll spend our guts to survive.” Somehow, for almost 30 years now, Wren has survived. Out of Oshawa, he didn’t have a dime to begin with. He made ends meet with a milk route. As a player he was poor, so he made a business of…

Wings’ Makeshift Line Playing Well Both Ways
DETROIT— It started out as a makeshift trio, forced together by injuries. But in time, the line of Mike Bloom. J.P. LeBlanc and Buster Harvey proved it was no accident. The unit has given the Detroit Red Wings some steady two-way hockey in recent weeks and the reason, according to general manager Alex Delvecchio, is simple. “It’s just a matter of hustling and working.” Delvecchio said, puffing on his ever-present cigar. “Every time out on the ice. they’re trying awfully hard. They’re very offensive minded and they’re making things happen. It’s true about the offense, but the unit’s defense shouldn’t be shortchanged. In its irst seven games together, the line was on the ice for one-repeat, one-goal against. Offensively the production isn’t what you’d expect from, say. the French Connection but with that kind of…
