CALGARY— There seems to be a contlict of opinion what course the World Hockey Association is going to take for next season but at least one person is ada-. mant the WHA won’t fold. He’s Jim Pattison, head of the company which controls the Calgary Cowboys of the WHA. Pattison says the WHA is here to stay and warns that league directors should be extremely careful in examining the stability of persons at tempting to buy their way into the WHA. Pattison told a Calgary Chamber of Commerce meeting that despite the continuing rumors of its imminent demise, the WHA is in existence to stay. “One of the reasons is that there is a large number of responsible, stable owners in this league,” said Pattison. “Another is that fan support is growing in many…

Boston College Upsets BU For Ice Title

BOSTON— The old king is back on the throne of the Land of Bean pot. After an exile of eleven years, Boston College won itself a Beanpot Tournament championship. The Eagle, who’d been wandering ‘round the walls of the Causeway Street Castle since 1965, soared home on the strength of brilliant goaltending and an inspired team effort to dump heavily favored Boston University 6-3 before a near capacity crowd in the Boston Garden. Freshman netminder Paul Skidmore was sparkling in the BC nets, turning aside 44 Terrier bids. Another rookie from the New York Metropolitan League by the name of Joe Mullen scored a pair of goals, added to two by junior Bob Ferriter and single tallies by Richie Smith and Kevin Bartholomew. Meehan, Lemieux Prove Instant Hits

WASHINGTON— The Capitals trade with the Flames doesn’t compare with the trade between Boston and the Rangers but it is the biggest swap to date in Washington’s short NHL life. We’re speaking of the Jan. 22 deal with the Flames that stripped the Capitals of their center, captain and team leader, Bill Clement, but got them center Gerry Meehan defenseman Jean Lemieux and a number one draft choice. Nearly a month later no squawks have sifted north from Georgia so they must be content with the barter. Evidently, Clement has continued his sweeping skating and tenacious forechecking throwing in his first career hat trick for good measure. But if the Flames are happy, the Capitals are doubly so.
