Gears Expand Lead Over North Division Pack
LOUISVILLE SLUGGER HOCKEY STICKS Made in Canada by HILLERICH & BRADSBY LTD Arnold Street Wallaceburg. Ontario Sold in U.S. and Canada SAGINAW— The Saginaw Gears are sporting a new look but as far as North Division rivals are concerned, it’s old hat. The Gears are still skating ahead of the pack and a recent surge has expanded Saginaw’s lead over second-place Port Huron to seven points. Key to the explosive Saginaw attack which has resulted in a four-game winning streak and six victories out of the last seven starts was the acquisition of center Wayne Zuk in a two-for-one trade with the Flint Generals plus a shuffling of offensive units by coach Don Perry. The return to action following a five-game layoff because of a hip injury of Dennis Desrosiers has also added…

French Connection Producing Separately For Sabres
BUFFALO— The first time the Buffalo Sabres visited the West Coast this season, the French Connection line scored exactly one goal. Gil Perreault got it. His wingers, Rick Martin and Rene Robert, didn’t pick up a single point between them on the three-game jaunt, on which the Sabres defeated only the California Golden Seals. The second West Coast trip produced two victories in three games and the members of the French Connection had themselves quite a scoring spree. The only thing was—the three of them were playing on different lines. In fact, the way coach Floyd Smith was mixing his forwards at that particular point in time, any one might be playing on different lines during a single game. In the three coast games the three ex-Connection forwards picked up a total of 19 points.…

Red Wings “Kids” Making Most Of Opportunity
DETROIT— The Detroit Red Wings are serious about giving their “kids” a chance to play and several of them, headed by Michel Bergeron, are making the most of their opportunity. Bergeron, the 5’10”, 170-pound right winger, has blossomed into a top-flight National Hockey League forward and has played himself into the Calder Trophy (for rookie of the year) picture. Certainly, Bergeron has a long haul ahead of him trying to catch the New York Islanders’ flashy rookie center, Bryan Trottier, but at least he’s a genuine challenger. Bergeron became the first rookie to score 20 goals this season and when you consider he didn’t get a chance to play regularly until after the first dozen games, his total is all the more impressive. “Oh, I think about it (rookie of the year),” Bergeron said. “But…
