Strong Defense Key To Canadiens’ Wide Margin
MONTREAL— If someone asked what would be the Montreal Canadiens’ “big” games at the Forum this season, the contest with the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday January 17 would have probably ranked near the top of the list. After all it was the final game before the All Star break in 1975 that saw the surprising Kings come to Montreal and knock off the Habs 6-3 to take hold on top spot in the Norris Division of the National Hockey League. Well, the Kings are surprising people again this season but in the direct opposite way that they did in 1974-75. When the West Coast club visited La Belle Province on that Saturday in January the Canadiens held a commanding 20-point lead over the Kings and the Habs’ subsequent 4-2 victory increased the margin…

Rutherford’s Incredible Shutout Run Ties Red wing Mark
DETROIT— Three shutouts in a row? For a Detroit Red Wing goalie? You gotta be kidding. Nope. Jimmy Rutherford is dead serious. Just ask Washington, Toronto and Minnesota. The brilliant Red Wing goalie, relieved of the burdensome task of playing nearly the entire schedule, is playing the best hockey of his professional career these days—and that’s something. Rutherford tied a Red Wing club mark set in 1955 by Glenn Hall when he posted consecutive shutouts, 4-0 over Washington in Detroit, 1-0 over the Maple Leafs in Toronto and back in Detroit again fora 5-0 victory over Minnesota. The three shutouts tied his career one-season high (accomplished while he was with Pittsburgh) and left him behind only Montreal’s Ken Dryden and the New York Islanders’ Glenn Resch in National Hockey League shut-outs this season. Rutherford’s goals…

WCHL All Star ‘Shootout’ Produces Confusion, Disappointment, Few Fans
LETHBRIDGE— The Western Canada Hockey League All Star game is supposed to be a contest involving “dream” teams. For more than a few people, the 197576 edition of the classic was more like a nightmare. For beginners, promoter Bill Burton of the host Lethbridge Broncos couldn’t believe it when the attendance was announced at 2,413. The Broncos hadn’t had a crowd that low in two seasons of WCHL play. The four goalies in the East-West matchup would rather the game had been postponed, as the league’s sharp-shooting forwards erupted for a 9-7 Western Division victory. And the many professional scouts in attendance weren’t overjoyed with the fact that the WCHL used over-age talent in the game. As one scout said “We already know about the 20-year-olds. Either they’ve been drafted already, or they aren’t good…
