S. and Canada OKLAHOMA CITY “One thing about hockey, it’s unpredictable,” said manager-coach Ray Miron of the Oklahoma City Blazers. “You can’t tape it. We get two goals in three games, get shut out twice, and then we get 15 in the next two games.” The first full week of January began with the Blazers suffering a 6-0 shutout in Salt Lake at the hands of Ernie Miller. The Jan. 5 whitewashing came almost on the heels of a 3-0 shutout at home against Mike Veisor and the Dallas Black Hawks. In between…
NAHL Gives Referees Support With New ‘Gag’ Rule
LOUISVILLE SLUGGER HOCKEY STICKS Made in Canada by HILLERICH & BRADSBY. LTD Arnold Street. Wallaceburg. Ontario Sold in U. S. and Canada SYRACUSE— The North American Hockey League has taken another step towards eliminating time-wasting harassment of game officials. The league’s Board of Governors adopted the National Hockey League’s “gag” rule at their semi-annual meeting in Syracuse on Jan. 15. The Governors also slightly refined the extensive revisions in misconduct penalties adopted on Nov. 13. The revisions which mandated automatic suspensions and stiff fines for all mis-conducts had been overwhelmingly effective, the 10-minute misconduct and resulting suspension was the wrong remedy for arguments with the referee or linesmen. As a result several proposals were offered by the Governors as rule amendments. The one finally settled on added the unsportsmanlike conduct minor and removed…
MINOR HOCKEY TIPS
Stops & Starts It’s pretty obvious how easy it would be to play a game if you didn’t have to stop and start so often. Those quick bursts of energy which get you off from a standing start take most of your energy when you’re on the ice for your shift. The statistics tell use hard working player makes between 8 and 11 stops each shift he’s on the ice. Naturally, that means as many starts. So, a player makes about 200 stops and starts if he plays a complete game and takes his regular shifts. We’re going to start practising starts and stops. We’ll begin with 100 the first time, then increase the number each practice until we get to 250. No, you won’t be overtrained. Practices should be tougher than games.…
Black Hawks Sniffing For Trade Help?
CHICAGO— The bus designated to carry the Black Hawks from the St. Louis airport to their hotel was ready to depart. Suddenly, a red cap hopped aboard. “Mr. Keith Magnuson,” said he, “there is a telephone call from a Mr. John Ferguson of the New York Rangers. Would you please get off the bus to answer it?” Magnuson, not knowing quite what to think, arose from his seat but an undercurrent of laughter from his team mates betrayed the trick: somebody had slipped the stranger five bucks to perpetrate the charade. Actually, trade rumors are no joke with this hockey club anymore, and coach Billy Reay couldn’t have asked for a better psychological prod entering the dog days of February even if he’d had planned it that way. The Hawks, to a man, are more…
