Bloomington, Hennepin Rally To Challenge Teams In MJHL

BLOOMINGTON— With Austin and St. Paul playing well enough to protect their first and second-place rankings, interest now in the Midwest Junior Hockey League centers on Bloomington, coming out of a losing slump, and Hennepin, victor in five of the club’s last six outings. BLOOMINGTON: After setting a club record with five straight losses, Bloomington rallied to edge St. Paul 54 Jan. 10 and Kostka 7-5 the next night. Prexy GM Ken Williamson sees the return of defensemen Dan Haskins and Steve Shandley off injuries as a key to the turnaround. Centers Greg Wymer and Rick Bergess both had seven point weeks, while right wing Ed Li-sorgar picked up five points. ST. Flames’ Kryskow Says He Prefers Defense, Shrugs Off Hat Trick

ATLANTA— Most National Hockey League forwards claim they are as concerned about defense as offense. Most of them are lying. But when Dave Kryskow says, “My job’s not scoring goals, it’s preventing them,” he really means it. He proved this the night he scored three goals in Kansas City and then afterwards insisted on discussing his defensive play. The WIHL Scene

CRANBROOK— Oh, what a difference a year makes. Even if the two are separated by just one day. No sooner did lowly Nelson knock off streaking Spokane 5-4 in overtime on New Year’s Day than did league-leading Cranbrook do the same to the longtime loop kings by a 4-2 count the following evening. And later that same night, last place Kimberley snapped a six-game losing skid by blasting high-riding Trail 7-2 to keep Spokane within four points of the losing Smokies, a margin with the Flyers have a chance to make up during an upcoming home-and-home set between the two clubs. CRANBROOK: The Royals’ triumph came in the squad’s only contest over a three-week stretch. Coach Gerry Goyer suited up for that game to replace All Star left winger Jim Miller who was temporarily…
