OSHAWA— Canadian amateur hockey in general and the Ontario Major Junior A Hockey League in particular mourned the death, just before Christmas, of Matt Leyden, connected with the Oshawa Generals for more than half a century. Leyden became manager of the Oshawa junior team in 1923 and continued in that capacity until 1953 when the arena burned down. Starting in 1938 the Generals won the Ontario Hockey Association junior A championship a record seven successive years and took the Memorial Cup in 1939,1940 and 1944. He helped bring junior A back to Oshawa in the early 1960s and during his long association with the game in his hometown had such outstanding players as Billy Taylor, Bill Ezinicki, Alex Delvecchio, Bobby Orr and many, many others. He also worked on the evy lacrosse executive for many…

Tie Games Result Of Team Effort In response to Dennis J. Crow’s letter in the Jan. 2 edition regarding tie games, I came to the conclusion that he must be a soccer player who has hit one ball too many on his head. The North American Soccer League has an identical system of tiebreaking, it’s no good there, so why would it be any better in hockey? Seals on the Wing… As a general rule, hockey lines do not last long. However, for as long as it lasts, one of the more interesting recently was put together in Oakland by Jack Evans, coach of the California Seals. It flanked the team’s newest player, Wayne Merrick, with a rising star, Dave Hrechkosy, and a setting Jim Pappin. The rebuilding Seals swapped promising Larry Patey to acquire the equally promising Merrick from the St. Louis Blues. A good-looking blonde out of Samia, Ontario, Merrick is a swift, graceful performer who has shown increasing skills with the stick as a passer and shooter. Whether Hrechkosy or Pappin can keep up with the longstriding pivot probably will decide the fate of the three as a unit. Whether or not they stay together, however, the…
