Boivin Latest To Try Hand With Blues
ST. LOUIS— Leo Boivin became coach of the St. Louis Blues after a unique three-week apprenticeship behind the bench. The day after Garry Young was fired as the Blues’ coach Boivin was named assistant coach to help Lynn Patrick who had been designated interim coach. Patrick is the team’s senior vice president. Boivin conducted the Blues’ practices because the 63-year-oId Patrick hadn’t been on skates in eight years. During the games both Patrick and Boivin were behind the bench with Patrick sending the lines over the boards and Boivin sitting or standing to the rear. Boivin took an authoritative hand with the team in practice, and many players began to look to Boivin for leadership. Tie Games Result Of Team Effort In response to Dennis J. Crow’s letter in the Jan. 2 edition regarding tie games, I came to the conclusion that he must be a soccer player who has hit one ball too many on his head. The North American Soccer League has an identical system of tiebreaking, it’s no good there, so why would it be any better in hockey? If two teams play a 60-minute tie, it is pointless to the majority of the players on both teams to have a handful or less of these players to settle the game in a matter of seconds. I believe that most fans would leave with an unsatisfied feeling after a game settled in this way, as opposed to a tie game. Would you like…

MINOR HOCKEY TIPS
Tip for Goalies Like baseball pitchers do with hitters, goalies should keep a book on forwards on other teams in their league. You should start remembering each shot opposing forwards take on you. Write them down after the game, if you like, but try to remember every move each makes coming in. Does so-and-so favor the wrist shot or the slap shot: Does he like to come in from a wide or narrow angle? Does he stop before he shoots or does he do it in stride? When he’s in close does he shoot more often than he passes to a teammate in better positions? One of the most important questions you have to ask yourself is whether he’s able to deke you more often than you can make him commit himself first.…
