Maloney Striving To Plug Center Weakness
VANCOUVER— There was not the slightest doubt what Maloney would have found underhis Christmas tree. His top prior ity would have been a quality center to buoy up the sagging fortunes of his Vancouver Canucks. Unfortunately in this sometimes cold, cruel world not everyone gets what they want for Chrismas. The Canucks have experienced a variety of problems during their first 30 or so National Hockey League games, but the one Maloney. their coach and general manager, keeps coming back to is the one at center ice. When the season began the Canucks figured to have a few problems, but center didn’t appear to be one of them. Ineligible Goaler Costly To Dayton; Toledo On The Move With Hot Streak
DAYTON— Dayton’s Gems are pretty hard to beat—on the ice. The South Division leaders have been skating merrily along with the best overall record in the two-division International Hockey League but be cause of what happened in Bing-hampton, N.Y., the Gems’ rather safe lead in the South was put in jeopardy. IHL Commissioner Bill Beagan ruled that Tommy McVie’s front runners were guilty of using an ineligible player in scoring victories over Columbus (at home) and at Saginaw and took the victories, along with the four points, away via forfeits. So. in the space of just 24 hours, the Gems dropped a pair of games and won another. Dream Of Big Time Keeps Charlotte’s Surbey In Game
CHARLOTTE— After a four-year absence. Jack Surbey wasn’t exactly wild about returning to Charlotte this season. To he truthful, retirement crossed his mind. The 24-year-old Surbey had played for the Hershey Bears last year and the Cincinnati Swords before that. He felt it was time for a promotion. Obviously, the parent Buffalo Sabres disagreed, as they optioned the 5-11. 190-pounder back to Charlotte. At first. Surbey recoiled against the move. It was a clear step backwards, but dreams of the big time kept him from quitting the game.
