Oilers’ First Place Bid Falls Short Of Target

TULSA— The Oilers of coach Orland Kurtenbach were repulsed in their bid to regain first place from the rival Oklahoma City Blazers, but were only a point off the pace. However, Kurt was down to the minimum of nine forwards. Center Danny Gloor, the club’s top scorer, was lost four or more weeks with a knee injury in the Nov. 22 loss at Oklahoma City. Two days later left wing Glen Richardson, part of the productive “Jolly Green Giants” line, was called by the parent Vancouver Canucks on an emergency basis. A 3-3 tie and a 5-1 victory in Tucson preceded the Oilers’ loss in Oke City. They came home to repel the Fort Worth Texans, 4-3. Bill Plett (of the “Green Giants”) scored twice in the second period of the tie in Tucson,…

Brandon Junior Goaler Scores Winning Goal

Kerry Seman of the Brandon Travellers made Manitoba Junior Hockey League (Tier Two) history here recently by scoring a goal. Seman is a goaltender. The weird play occurred in the second period, with Brandon ahead 3-1 over Ab McDonald’s Portage Terriers. The referee was signalling a minor penalty against Brandon, and Portage goalie Ralph Bradbury raced to the bench infavor of an extra attacker. Terriers’ Brad Harding, from the Traveller blueline, rifled a slap shot which grazed the Brandon crease, ticking Seman’s stick ever-so-slightly. The puck caromed off the backboards, up against the sideboards, and down the middle of the ice… right into the yawning Portage cage. Since Seman was the last Traveller to touch it, without gaining possession and control (which would have caused a stoppage), the goal counted and the 19-year-old Winnipeg…

Dynamos Hustling Despite Poor Record; Remparts, Draveurs On Collision Course

SHAWINIGAN— Could it be Shawinigan Dynamos are staging a comeback? It’s not what most people consider a turnaround of tremendous proportions but to the Dynamos a tie is an accomplishment in itself.. Following a 1974-75 season which saw them win only 16 games out of 72, the Dynamos got off to a much better start with a .500 record after nine games of the present campaign. Then on Oct. 19 Shawinigan’s leading scorer Benoit Plouffe was injured in a tragic on-ice accident in Sherbrooke and the Dynamos’ went into a tailspin which has all but eliminated them from any hopes of reaching the post-season action. The Dynamos were credited with a win in their next outing, which was really a gift as the Beavers refused to report for the game in Shawinigan for fear of…

Unspectacular Oddleifson Gets Job Done For Canucks

VANCOUVER— Through the first two months of the National Hockey League season the Vancouver Canucks have suffered slightly more downs than ups. They’ve had one seven-game unbeaten streak, but twice have gone four consecutive games without a win. Their goal-tending has ranged from hot to cold to lukewarm while a steady string of injuries has kept the roster in a constant state of change. But if there has been one consistent factor to their game, it has been the steady play of Chris Oddleifson. The tall, lean center is far from the most spectacular in the game. He doesn’t dazzle people with his skating like Gilbert Perreault or overpower them with his strength like a Phil Esposito. Somehow, though, he generally manages to get the job done. What be wasn’t handed in pure physical ability…
