Virginia Wings have acquired new ownership under Reid Ewrin as well as choice dates in the Scope to assure the team of being among the AHL’s nine starters for ‘75-76. Syracuse Eagles have been strangely quiet in the offseason and while their plans are still unsettled, the AHL expects they’ll be back on the firing line next season. • HOCKEY DELEGATES went away from the summer meetings feeling a little bitter that the NHL didn’t resolve its many problems and create a little more news for the visiting media, but solving the seemingly endless troubles besetting the league, can’t be done over-night. NHL, president Clarence Campbell was kept hopping with so many queries to so many problems. He did predict California would make it to the starting line next fall but wasn’t quite as optimistic about Pittsburgh. The NHL didn’t finalize its format for the Russian tour of NHL American cities next December and January either. Winas Dio Into Amateur Draft To Solve Defense Problems

DETROIT— After four straight years of drafting forwards or goalkeepers first, the Detroit Red Wings took a look at their poor defensive statistics and loaded up on rearguards in the amateur draft. The first three, including No. I pick Rick Lapointe, were defensemen and half of the 17-01 picks were defensemen with another listed as a defenseman forward. Not since 1970. when then general manager Sid Abel selected Serge La-jeunesse. had Detroit used its first round pick to select a defenseman. Unfortunately for the Wings, Lajeunesse didn’t turn out as they hoped he would nor did trades improve the quality of the Detroit defense.
