Bruins May Use Hodge As Bait To Land Wing
BOSTON— One of the cliches of big-time U.S. collegiate football coaches once was that they were hoping to keep the alumni, “Sullen but not mutinous.” After the Bruins’ recent demise in the Stanley Cup playoffs and the subsequent post mortems, it would seem incumbent on the Bruins’ management to take some steps to appease the mutterers among the ranks of those who plunk down their dough to watch NHL hockey in Boston. The cries of outrage have not yet reached crescendo, but that the fans are sullen is beyond doubt. How Harry Sinden, the GM. will attend to this matter should be known in a few weeks. Harry might want to make a deal or two so that he can into the draft with a settled roster to start from. Of course, there…
Gordie Howe Headed For Possible Aeros’ Presidency
HOUSTON— Gordie Howe demonstrated his flair for the dramatic. He scored two goals and an assist in his final game of his final season as the Houston Aeros completed a four-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques with a 7-2 victory in the best-of-seven finals of the World Hockey Association Avco World Trophy playoffs. “I’m extremely tired but I’m happy I stuck around this year,” said Howe, 47. “But it’s time to hang up the skates. I’m slated for the front office. They’re going to name me president of the Houston Aeros.” George Bolton, in Quebec City to watch the Aeros wrap up their second playoff title in two years, has made an offer to Irv Kaplan, current owner, to buy the club. “If the sale goes through,” said Howe, “I’ll be the president and I…
SHL Hoping For Interlocking Schedule With NAHL
THE HOCKEY NEWS EVERY WEEK for the price of a ticket to a SINGLE GAME! Superb Hockey Reading Each Month HOCKEY WORLD & HOCKEY PICTORIAL ROANOKE— The Southern Hockey League will propose at its annual meeting that the SHL seek an interlocking schedule with the North American Hockey League. “The NAHL doesn’t need us, we need them.” said the SHL official, who requested anonymity. “Our teams have never drawn well against the northern teams, but if Norfolk and Richmond don’t join the SHL. we can’t afford to have the same four teams coming into our buildings next year.” Ironically, the impending request by the Southern League smacks of a direct contradiction to the reason that the league was formed in the first place. After seasons of failing to draw as a southern appendage to the now-defunct…
Luce Winner Of Masterton
BUFFALO— Two-way forward Don Luce was declared the winner of the Bill Masterton Trophy for the 1974-75 National Hockey League season as selectors finally recognized the excellent all-round play of the Buffalo Sabres’ ace center. The trophy, which is presented annually by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association to the player who “exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication,” also carries a $1,000 monetary award from the NHL. Luce, who scored 33 goals and had 43 assists for the Sabres, is considered one of the NHL’s best defensive forwards and was one of the major reasons the club reached the Stanley Cup finals this year. Mrs. Carole Masterton, widow of the Minnesota North Star player after whom the trophy was awarded, was on hand during the cup playoffs to present the award to Luce.…
