Joe Watson Receives Flyers’ “Ashbee Award”

PHILADELPHIA— The words “Joe Watson” were barely out of Barry Ashbee’s mouth when Watson was leaping off the Flyers’ bench and gleefully shuffling to center ice. Watson recovered to play another consistent game in the 1-1 tie. Later, still clearly pleased at his selection by a panel of Philadelphia writers and broadcasters. Watson smiled and said, “I didn’t even know there was an award until ‘Ashcan’ announced it. It’s really nice, especially since I don’t…

Denver Fans Start Thinking NHL After Spurs’ Quick Playoff Exit

DENVER— Their lone season in the Central League (and their last in the minors) ended with a quick playoff exit for Jean-Guy Talbot’s Denver Spurs. So the Mile High City fans could concentrate on getting ready for a National League entry in the fall. Minor League hockey ended in Denver on a victorious note, as the Spurs rallied for a 7-4 victory over Fort Worth, to kill the Texans’ playoff hopes. The previous night Denver had suffered a 4-3 loss in Fort Worth. It was the line of Dave Johnson. Norm Cournoyer and Wes Wiseman who sparked the victory. Johnson got the hat trick, and his mates each scored once. The Spurs put up a pair of close battles in the playoff games, but couldn’t overcome early deficits in both contests. Howie Heggedal was…
