Stars End Campaign In Familiar Fashion Losing Final Outings
TWIN CITIES— The Minnesota North Stars capped the most disappointing season in their eight-year NHL history about the same way as 1974-75 went for them, in failure. Practically the only incentive left for them, besides individual scoring totals, was the possible role as spoilers in the Conn Smythe Division with their final games against St. Louis, Vancouver and Chicago. The North Stars, alas, had no say in how the division race ended with Vancouver first. St. Louis second and Chicago third, because they lost all three games. Against the Blues, the North Stars blew a 3-1 lead and lost 7-3 with two games to go in the season. Against the Canucks, the North Stars managed only 10 shots on goal the entire game to lose 4-1. Then came the season finale in Chicago.…
Division-Winning Wings Surprised By Lowly Hawks
NEW HAVEN— The New Haven Nighthawks suddenly discovered how much fun it is to score goals and they went on a three-game rampage, much to the chagrin of the Southern Division winning Virginia Wings, who were bounced from the Calder Cup playoffs by the Hawks in a major upset. It all started in the final game of the regular season when coach Dean Prentice’s team ran up a 9-6 score in Rochester. The most goals the Nighthawks had scored all season up to that point was seven and they’d reached that figure only four times. But two nights after the Rochester game, which meant nothing to either team. New Haven had to play Syracuse in a sudden-death playoff game for a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs. The Nighthawks scored three times in the first…
Lessard’s Shutout Goaling Just Too Much For Flint
SAGINAW— Mario Lessard turned aside 49 shots while blanking Flint. 4-0. for second straight night to wrap up quarter-finals victory for Saginaw. Dennis Desrosiers overwhelmed Generals with seven goals in five games. Russ Friesen limited 61-goal scorer Doug Manchak to two goals while Desrosiers bagged eighth goal in 7-4 loss to Muskegon but boosted total to 11 with hat trick in 5-3 triumph in second game of semi-finals. Stu Irving wasted two goals in defeat at Muskegon. Gears’ 5-2 record for first seven playoff tilts a contrast to 4-7 finish in regular season. Gears beat Muskegon in Saginaw sixth straight time this season.…
Providence Puts Three On AHL’s First Squad
Special To The Hockey News HARRISBURG— The Providence Reds. Nova Scotia Voyageurs and Rochester Americans won the admiration of the selectors as the three teams combined to dominate the annual American Hockey League All Stars selected by the coaches for the Harrisburg Sunday Patriot-News and THE HOCKEY NEWS. The Reds placed three men on the first team, the Voyageurs two and the Americans one. Oustide of defenseman Larry Goodenough of Richmond, who finished the season as a member of the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and wight wing Yves Bergeron of Hershey, the story was pretty much the same with the second team. Nova Scotia and Rochester each put two men on the team and Providence one. Individually, the Reds and Amerks again dominated. Doug Gibson of Rochester was chosen most valuable player while Providence’s Joe…
