Golden Age Of Scouts’ Hockey Shortlived

KANSAS CITY— The points never came in any great flood, and never promised to lift the Scouts even close to a playoff spot. Still, they came for a while, an upset here and there and an occassional tie, until, at one point in February the Scouts were actually expected to win home games against selected opponents. From the period between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15, they rose up and smote six of them, tied three others and were being looked at with a sort or paternalistic approval by the National Hockey League. But this, the Golden Age of Scouts’ hockey, was not to last long. As the season headed into its final two weeks, the Scouts weren’t surprising anyone anymore. In the period between Feb. 13 and April 6. they won two games…

SASKATOON— It’s getting so you can’t tell a winner from a loser in the Western Canada Hockey League…which is great for excitement, but hard on the hearts of coaches and fans. For the first time in league history. Calgary, Edmonton and Flin Flon failed to qualify for the post-season playoffs, and each club did its nosedive in the same season. The odds against that happening have been astronomical prior to this season. It wasn’t so long ago that Edmonton and Flin Flon met head-to-head in the WCHL final three years in a row, from 1968 through 1971. Flin Flon and Edmonton have each been in four league finals while Calgary has been in one since the WCHL was formed nine seasons ago. While No. 1 Charlotte was polishing off defending champion Roanoke Valley in four games, Hampton was carried to the full seven games by shorthanded, gallant Winston-Salem. The Gulls had to win the last two games of the rugged series to gain the finals. It was a unique series, in that tour of the seven wins came on the road.
