VANCOUVER— Perhaps the reason why Garry Monahan’s hockey skills so frequently go unappreciated is that we live in a society geared to workship statistics. The cost of living index, the gross national product, the unemployment rate are all factors that govern our daily lives. We learn to watch apprehensively to see if they go up or down. But Garry Monahan’s worth can’t be measured by statistics. No one keeps tables to demonstrate how seldom a player loses the puck in his own end. Numbers do not accurately reflect a player’s versatility, his defensive skills, his penalty killing ability or his competitive fire. If such figures existed. Monahan would rate high in them all. Canadians’ Coach Bownass Gets Axe; aruk Establishes Career Goal Mark

KINGSTON— “I’m absolutely shocked.” That was the reaction of Jack (Red) Bownass when he was informed by Kingston Canadians’ general manager Lloyd (Punch) Scherer he had been relieved of his coaching duties with only four games left in the Ontario Hockey Association Major Junior A schedule. Bownass had reason to be upset. Just 12 months ago he had been named coach of the year in Ontario Junior A hockey when the new Kingston franchise finished in 10th position and accumulated 47 points. 10 above the old Hamilton Red Wings who were in the cellar. It was the most points earned by any new Ontario Junior A team in recent years.
