Sabres’ Robert Enjoying Finest Pro Season

BUFFALO— Rene Robert was hurt and thus got on the ice only three times, on power plays, in the Buffalo Sabres’ home game against the New York Islanders. But, in that game. Rene managed to keep his point-scoring streak going and tied the club record for total points in a season. When Robert began the play that resulted in a goal by Fred Stanfield to start the Sabres rallying from an 0-3 deficit to a 3-3 tie. he registered his 88th point of the season. That tied the record set by Gil Perreault in 1972-73. It also extended Robert’s streak in which he picked up at least one point a game to 14 games. In the eight games previous to the one against the Islanders, he had scored eight goals. With 16 games remaining in…

Hot, Muggy Weather Flames’ Best Friend

ATLANTA— About the best thing that could happen to the Atlanta Flames would be an early arrival of spring. They like that warm weather, when the straining Omni air conditioners can’t keep the ice from turning a little soggy in places. And the air is muggy, and you feel like you’re breathing through a sponge. It’s not that the Flames like to torture themselves. It’s just that they figure the opposition will be less able to cope with the hostile conditions. “I’m hoping the weather gets a lot hotter,” said defenseman Noel Price. “It makes a big difference. It’s harder to breathe that warm air. “And the teams that come in here and aren’t used to it—well, it’ll hurt ‘em.” The Flames figure the weather advantage will be a major factor in helping them overtake the…

Hawks, Canucks Set Slow Pace But Race Going Down To Wire

VANCOUVER— Neither is likely to get arrested for speeding, but no one can say the race between the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Black Hawks isn’t close. In fact, it may come down to the final game of the season before the winner of the National Hockey Leagues Smythe Division is decided. The Canucks complete their season on home ice April 4 against the Minnesota North Stars, but on that date the Hawks will still have two games to play. How they fare in those two—they visit the St. Louis Blues April *5 and finish up at home against Minnesota April 6—could determine the ultimate winner and who gets the first-round bye in the playoffs. Then again, perhaps the Hawks and Canucks are taking too much for granted feeling they’re the only contenders. The Blues…

NHL’s Stars of the week

RICK MacLEISH Philadelphia Flyers If the defending Stanley Cup champion Flyers hope to repeat their feat of last season, 25-year-old Rick MacLeish is going to have to play a major role. During the past week the Flyers tallied 19 times and MacLeish figured in 12 of them. He had three goals and as many assists in 9-2 romp over Minnesota, a goal and an assist in 8-2 loss to Pittsburgh and a pair of markers and two assists in 8-5 win over Detroit. RON STACKHOUSE Pittsburgh Penguins If you were given the choice of any defenseman in the NHL who was most likely to tie an assists record set by Bobby Orr of the Bruins, your most unlikely candidate would be Ron Stackhouse. Stackhouse’s six assists in 8-2 thumping of Philadelphia tied the record for most…
