PLAYERS OWN COUGARS CHICAGO— Stranger things have happened in hockey but the case of the players buying over control of the hockey club has to rank as one of the most unusual in the annals of professional big league hockey. The Chicago Cougars, beset by dwindling attendance, low finances and owners that felt they couldn’t lose another nickel and still keep their sanity, were tossed on the money market and a new group headed by Cougar stars Pat Stapleton, Ralph Backstrom and goaler Dave Dryden, along with their lawyer, Jeff Rosen, pitched in and bought a large chunk of the troubled WHA chub. MONTREAL— Laval Nationals had just recorded an important 5-3 win over the Montreal Juniors at the Forum but coach Jacques St. Jean didn’t seem overcome with happiness. “My players want to play only one game out of three or four.” said St. Jean. “I am expecting the club to pick up when the team returns to full strength.
