The Gift Of Giving… EDWIN VERNON WESTFALL is a good hockey player, but a better person. At Christmas season it is appropriate to appreciate a gentleman who has learned the gift of giving; He is a good guy. who does not boast about his charitable activities, but appreciates the honor he has received. This spring he accepted the Charlie Conacher Cancer Research Award for his outstanding humanitarian contributions, mainly with the mentally retarded. He is the fifth winner of this National Hockey League award. Previous winners were George Armstrong, Bob Baun, Gordie Howe and Gary Bergman. The Butterfly Drop There are always arguments over which goalies are best — those who are standup or those who flop. It doesn’t matter what the critics say. The answers are always in the goals-against averages. The illustration shows the butterfly drop. You can see most of the lower part of the net is covered to stop those dangerous sliding pucks. The goalie’s stick hand is alert and he’s ready with his glove hand. The butterfly drop is a good defence against screened shots from fairly close in and especially good for stopping shots from rebounds. ANN ARBOR— A box lacrosse player with two gimpy knees may well be the key to Michigan’s chances in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Robbie Moore, a diminutive All-American goaltender, figures he has a lot of catching up to do. and much to prove. The 5-foot-5 junior from Sarnia, Ontario, was confined to the bench for the first month of the season after undergoing surgery on his left knee. He suffered the injury prior to the Wisconsin series in early November and was replaced by freshman Frank Zimmerman who miraculously kep the Wolverines in contention during his absence. “With a healthy Robbie Moore.
