TWIN CITIES — What was that Walter Bush Jr., president of the Minnesota North Stars, said about the development of the rookie harvest? Give them six weeks to two months to get their NHL legs. It was the seventh week of the 197475 season when the St. Louis Blues came to Metropolitan Sports Center, and the number one and two amateur draft choices were watching the teams skate up and down the ice, from the bench. For Richard Nantais, the 20-year-old Repentigny, Que. left winger, it was an opportunity to watch in uniform rather than from the press box. BONANZA FOR SOME-HEARTBREAK FOR OTHERS

TORONTO— Around the executive suite of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the name Ernie Moser is one that isn’t heard too often. Or mention Ray Martyniuk to the Montreal Canadiens’ hierarchy, and they turn a funny color. Those two players, winger Moser of Estevan Bruins and goalie Martyniuk of Flin Bombers, were first-round selections in the National Hockey League’s universal amateur draft. Neither player has played a game in the NHL. They’re among the rather short list of failures in the NHL’s pipeline into the North American hockey talent crop. Since the draft became a truly effective force in 1969, the manner in which teams have selected players is a major determing factor in their futures.
