PHILADELPHIA — Billy Reay raised some eyebrows and lowered some jaws in Philadelphia last season when the Chicago coach added Joe Watson to the West Division celebrities for the NHL All Star Game. Many Philadelphia observers thought Barry Ashbee deserved the salute. Ashbee had persevered through an extended minor league sentence to play, at 34. the best hockey of his career. Later, Flyer fans were soothed when Ashbee was voted to the second All Star team. Reay’s selection of Watson was based on the veteran defenseman’s steady service as an original Flyer. The older (31) of the Flyers’ Watson brothers played well in his All Star debut and later was captured for film posterity as the Flyer controlling the puck in the final moments of the Stanley Cup clincher over Boston. Perhaps four South rivals can be thankful for the Gems’ woes because a five-team battle for four playoff positions is keeping the fans’ interest. Everyone figured coach Tommy McVie would have a good defense because that’s been a Dayton trademark. The Gems have rewarded those expectations by allowing an average of 3.2 goals per game while opening a six-point bulge over second-place Columbus. However, the Gems might have run away from the tightly-bunched…
NHL WEEK — In Review
MONTREAL — • Penalties are proving more costly this season than ever before in the National Hockey League. A little more than one out of every four goals are scored by teams enjoying a man advantage at the time. While the overall goal production is up by about half a goal a game compared to last season after 187 games, more than 70 percent (71.2) of that increase is attributable to power-play scoring. It is not surprising that Buffalo Sabres, which lead the 18 teams in goals scored, also have the most potent power-play. Statistically, there have been 1.279 goals scored of which 332 were off power-plays. Last season at this stage of the schedule there were 1,133 goals and 228 of those were with a team holding a man advantage. There have…
