CHLNames MVP Award For Ivan

DALLAS — The Central Hockey League will award the newly adopted Tommy Ivan Trophy to the player selected as the most valuable to his team during the regular season play. It is Titting that the most prestigious individual league award in the CHL will now carry the name of a man who has made such an outstanding contribution to the league over its entire 11-year history. Ivan’s outstanding hockey career as a player, coach, general manager and executive was publicly recognized this summer when he was inducted into Hockey’s Hall of Fame. The Tommy Ivan Trophy heads the list of individual awards that Central League players will be working for during the 1974-75 season. Hockey Ad Lib

New Season Recalls The Old Being nostalgic by nature, the new season moves me to remember. So, a personal piece. The years go by. We get old. New stars arise. New champions are crowned. Old favorites retire. Old men who played when we were young pass on. Well, we all pass on. But the game goes on. How old was I when I saw my first game? Nine or ten. In 1936 or 1938. But they were there: Nels Stewart, Sweeney Schriner, Ching Johnson, Art Coulter, Cec Dillon. Art Chapman, Neil Colville. Babe…

Wilson Not Pleased With Stags’ Showing; San Diego Impresses

DETROIT— The Michigan Stags, after weeks and months of planning, finally got to the ice stage in the World Hockey Association and coach Johnny Wilson was not generally pleased with the results. The Stags lost their exhibition opener 2-0 to Minnesota but came back strong to topple the Houston Aeros 5-l at Detroit’s Cobo Hall. Two nights later the Aeros did the Stags in 5-4 again playing in Cobo Hall. In between they took Indianapolis 5-1. Then it was on to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a game with the Cleveland Crusaders and the Stags again came off on the losing end 5-2. It all added up to two wins in five pre-season starts, which probably accounted for Wilson’s displeasure as the Stags prepared to wind up the exhibition series with games against Chicago and…
