Gordon Winds Up As Coach, Too, With Burns Likely Aide
TWIN CITIES — The last remaining task in the re-organization of the Minnesota North Stars was completed recently with the announcement that Jack Gordon, the newly-named general manager, will also serve as coach. Gordon was first appointed as general manager only, replacing the outgoing Wren Blair and four days later he agreed to take on the dual responsibilities. The incumbent coach of the North Stars. Parker MacDonald, was offered a job in the Minnesota organization. MacDonald, who succeeded Gordon behind the bench last Nov. 20. will probably wind up either in a scouting capacity or return to his former post as coach and general manager of the North Stars primary farm club at New Haven. There is also the probability that Gordon will appoint a combination assistant coach and assistant general manager. That could…
Beagan Facing Top Opposition To Russia Tour
DETROIT— Commissioner Bill Beagan may run into considerable opposition when he tries to sell the International Hockey League’s Board of Governors on sending an All Star team to Russia in December. A United States team has been invited to compete in the fsvestia Cup matches in Moscow. The invitation was accepted by Thayer Tutt, president of the Amateur Hockey Association of the U.S., and he invited Beagan to send the IHL’s team. Beagan said. “I’m honored that we’ve been invited. I have to notify the governors but I expect they’ll vote to send a team.” He said the IHL’s entry likely would be an All Star team. Beagan’s confidence wasn’t shared by at least two general managers. “Who’s going to pay for it?” asked Ken Wilson of the Des Moines Capitols. He added, “Last year…
McVie Back As Bench Coach But Sheds Gems’ GM Role
DAYTON— Tommy McVie has been rehired as coach of the Dayton Gems and added a job that’s better suited to his desires. McVie. 38. also will become director of player personnel for the Gems and apparently will relinquish his previous title as general manager coach. He had held both jobs since Jan. I after Lefty McFadden resigned to join the new Washington entry in the National Hockey League. In another front office move. John Huffman rejoined the Gems in his former capacity of business manager. The likeable Huffman had been with the Gems for their first eight seasons but was forced to give up the post because of illness. The switches apparently resulted after a late-season reorganization of the Gems’ hierarchy in which Ralph Skilken became the dominant force. Skilken has extensive interests outside hockey…
