TORONTO — One of the reasons Toronto Maple Leaf defenseman Borje Salming gave for signing with the National Hockey League chib instead of remaining in Sweden was money. Pay for hockey players is so low in Sweden ‘that players have to have outside jobs to support themselves. The Leals’ top rookie-of-the-year candi date learned a little more about the financial rewards of playing in the NHL when he was presented with a check for $3,500 as the winner of the Toronto segment of the Molson Cup — the trophy awarded to the Toronto and Montreal players receiving the most three-star selections daring the season. Phoenix First WHL Team To Repeat Cup Double

PHOENIX— When the Portland Buekaroos couldn’t heat Phoenix goaltender Gary Simmons, they began beating him up. When that didn’t work, the Buckaroos had lost the best-of-seven finals in five games. The Roadrunners. who had repeated as Coleman L. Hall Cup winners over the regular season’s 78-game route, also repeated as Lester Pgrick Cup champions at the expense of the Bucks. It was the first time in the 27-year history of the Western Hockey League that a team has repeated as both regular season and playoff victors. Only three teams have ever repeated as Patrick Cup winners, the San rancisco Seals in 1963 and 1964. the Seattle Totems in 1967 and 1968 and the Vancouver Canucks in 1969 and 1970. Kromm Scoffs At All Star Picks As Hawks’ ‘Dream Team’ Wins It All

DALLAS— Phooey on All Star teams. The Dallas Black Hawks have found something better. The rest of the Central Hockey League turned deaf ears at the season’s end when the Hawks’ teapot-sized coach Bobby Kromm kicked up a furious tempest over the league’s official All Star team, a merry crew which included two players each from Omaha. Oklahoma City and Forth Worth but nary a one from Big D. Then the CHL writers’ All Star team was released and it was no better, as far as the Black Hawks went.
