Robinson Flashes Scoring Style From The Slot
MONTREAL— It’s quiz time. Name two NHL players who specialize in scoring from the slot. Phil Esposito, naturally, is the first name that comes to mind. Want another? How about Larry Robinson? Larry Robinson? That gangling young defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens? That Larry Robinson? Yup. one and the Same. While Robinson isn’t likely to be mentioned in the same breath as Espo again, for one wild weekend he exhibited Esposito-like prowess from the slot, that valued piece of ice 20-25 feet in front of the net. The Marvelville Marvel took some solid advice from Canadiens’ player development director Claude Ruel, combined it with a stick borrowed from defense partner Serge Savard and came up with three goals from the slot in two games. Hardly enough to prompt the opening of record books, but impressive stuff…

Kelly’s 20-Goal Aim Falls Short But Pens Happy With His Muscle
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Penguin left-wing Bob “Battleship” Kelly became a fighter because he knew it was the only way he’d make the NHL. While playing junior hockey with the Fort William Canadiens, Kelly “had a blow up with the coach” that resulted in his missing two seasons. “1 just quit the team, and they didn’t try too hard to get me to come back.” he recalled “The layoff affected my skating and shooting, so I knew I’d have to make it as a fighter.” Kelly hooked on with the Port Arthur club of the Thunder Bay Junior Hockey League, and battled his way from there through the minors for six years, finally making his NHL debut with St. Louis this season. Never a great scorer. Kelly spent a lot of time in the penalty…

Harrison’s Return Makes Edmonton Playoff ‘Dark Horse’
EDMONTON— Edmonton Oilers are the dark horse of the WHA West Division playoffs. The three other West playoff teams — Houston. Minnesota and Winnipeg — openly admit being fearful of Oilers. As Houston’s Gordie Howe explains: “Edmonton has the best checking team in our division. They’d give us the most trouble.” Winnipeg goalie Ernie Wakely adds: “Oilers are the most rugged team in our division. If you back down a step against them, you’re in trouble. They can wear down another team over a seven-game series.” Biggest reason for the enthusiastic attitude of Edmonton fans toward the playoffs is the return of star players Jim Harrison. Ed Joyal and Tom Gilmore. All were sidelined by injuries for lengthy periods late in the season. With the trio in the lineup. Oilers’ scoring power is…
