Rota, Farr WHA Bound?

EDMONTON— The World Hockey Association expects to sign at least dozen National Leaguers for the 1973-74 season. Two of the first reportedly heading away from the NHL are Randy Rota of Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres’ backup goaler Rocky Farr. Rota, a small but high-scoring forward who Edmonton’s Bill Hunter was hot after, is believed close to signing with the new Cincinnati Stingers. The Cincinnati club starts play in the WHA next season. The Edmonton Oilers are rumored to have Farr already locked up for next season although Hunter has made no comment on the fact his club has already signed the NHL netminder.…

Sabres’ Misfortunes Haven’t Hurt Martin’s Scoring

BUFFALO— No matter what has happened to the Buffalo Sabres this National Hockey League season — and plenty has — Rick Martin has continued to score. When Gil Perreault, his talented center, suffered a broken leg and broke up the French Connection for 23 games. Rick kept right on scoring. In fact, the first three games after Gil’s injury. Martin scored six goals. When Perreault returned, the reunited French Connection just couldn’t seem to going at its pace of last season. But get Martin still scored. With four weeks of the season to go. Martin had surpassed the 40-goal mark and seemed almost certain to better his best year. 1971-72 when he set a league rookie record with 44. When the Buffalo Sabres Booster Club held its annual awards dinner late in the season.…

Hamilton Lauds Harvey’s Play As Center Gives Bears Lift

HERSHEY— Hugh Harvey hasn’t exactly had an easy assignment this season, but the Hershey Bears’ center has turned in a remarkable performance. “I think Hugh’s had more different wingers on his line than any center on the club. said coach Chuck Hamilton. “Still he’s really been rolling up the points.” Harvey, in his second season with the Bears, was the club’s second leading scorer as of March 7 with 24 goals and 34 assists for 58 points. Ahead of him is another center. Jim Hrycuik. who garnered 67 points on 24 goals and 43 assists. However, he’s had the advantage of skating with a set line of veteran Robin Burns and Steve Andrascik. BU Topples Harvard In Final With Breaks, Hot Netminder

BOSTON— By the time the dust had settled in stately old Boston Garden, nearly everyone in the East had agreed that the long, tortuous ECAC road had brought home the best the Yankees had to offer. Third seeded Boston University upended second seed Harvard 4-2 for its second ECAC Division one crown in three years. Both went to represent the East in the NCAA tournament. The championship final was a swift, hotly contested affair which was decided by the breaks in favor of BU and a hot hand by Terrier All-America goalie and Tourney MVP Ed Walsh. A thriller from start to finish, it contrasted with the comparatively dull semi-final games which came to the foregone conclusions of Harvard 7. RPI and BU 7. Cornell 3.
