McVie Will Be Gems ‘Silent 18th’ Player
DAYTON— Tommy McVie spent his first four games as the “silent 18th” member of the Dayton Gems but International Hockey League history may be made before March 24. McVie began the season as player-coach of the Gems. However, with an abundance of players, sometimes as many as 23, he was largely inactive as a player. He appeared in only eight games. Midway through December it became obvious that Lefty McFadden was about to leave as the Gems’ general manager, so McVie gradually took on some of those duties. On Jan. 1 McVie was officially named general manager while retaining his behind-the-bench role. It was jokingly suggested that McVie should get onto the ice at least once to become the IHL’s first player-coach-general manager. He said, “I’ve just about had it as a player.…
Oke City, Omaha Share New Problem, No Ice For Upcoming Cup Playdowns
OKLAHOMA CITY — Maybe Gerry Moore wasn’t the only one that noticed it but the Oklahoma City Blazers’ foxy coach has uncovered quite a scoop about the forthcoming Adams Cup playoffs. Most of the particulars of next month’s action have been set down in writing already—the winning team, for example, will fly home with $1,800 per man in pending money—but there’s a little problem regarding the final playoff round that could really upset the whole apple cart. “If we and Omaha get in the playoffs,” figures the Blazers’ second-year coach, “we’re gonna have to arrange some other place to play. We’ve got no ice and they’ve got no ice. “I guess they can practice in Fort Worth or Dallas, and maybe we can work out in Albuquerque. Where we’ll play the games in anybody’s…

CINCINNATI— Coach Floyd Smith of the Cincinnati Swords noted that Rochester veteran center Art Stratton is a leading candidate for most valuable honors in the American Hockey League this season. then quickly advanced a candidate himself. Billy Inglis. The name should be familiar to voters for the Les Cunningham Plaque because he was the MVP a year ago. “Actually,” Smith said, “Billy and Art a lot alike. They both mean an awful lot to their hockey clubs. They both kill penalties, play the power plays, regular shifts and generally are on the ice late in a close game. “We had a stronger hockey club last season with a lot of balanced scoring. But injuries, both for us and the parent Buffalo Sabres, have left us shorthanded a lot this season. “Billy Inglis has…
