OAKLAND — The California Seals have had a common interest this season. It had to do with the coming of the Messiah to deliver them from their miseries. Well, it finally happened and the National Hockey League, which has taken over the troubled Californians. is hoping that while all that glitters is not gold, there is a good deal of gold among the young Seals that will start glittering under new management. The NHL stepped in to completely change the face of the last-place Seals with a major facelift at the management level. The Seals have a new president, coach and director of player personnel. Brown Drops Soares For ‘Failing To Control Players’

BOSTON— For the second time this season, an ECAC Division One head has received his Walking papers and been replaced by a young Boston University graduate moving up from the position of assistant. In December it was Leon Abbott, booted out of BU and succeeded by Jack Parker. Now it’s Brown’s Allan Soares, fired in favor of interim coach Dick Toomey, who would also remain as frosh coach. The statement released by Andy Geiger, Brown’s athletic director, explains that Soares was dismissed for his failure to control his players aggressive tendencies. The culmination was Brown’s 6-1 loss at Harvard wherein two Harvard players required stitches and a third was knocked out by a high stick. Bruin Dick Gamble conked Kevin Burke in the last minute and recieved a game misconduct. Soares suspended him indefinitely,…

Young Ice Fan Says Fighting For Birds I read a letter in your Jan. 11 issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS. It was in response to a letter in the Dec. 7 issue that read, fighting in professional hockey should have a two game suspension. It also read, that fighting was a bad influence on children. I’m 11 and go to school where the only thing they know about hockey is the fights. The letter in the Jan. 11 issue said that fighting is part of the excitement of pro hockey.
