Flyers’ Crisp No High Scorer But His Goals Prove Important

PHILADELPHIA— It happens in nearly every city the Flyers visit: pre-game newspaper stories warn readers to get the women and children off the streets, the Broad Bullies are coming! The warnings aren’t necessary, of course, because despite their league-leading penalty total, the Bullies aren’t the menacing terrors of last season. And. as anyone who knows them will testify, off the ice the Bullies are gentlemen. No one has ever seen Dave Schultz or Bob Kelly shove an old lady off sidewalk or punch a stewardess. Fans in places such as Vancouver. Oakland and Atlanta have seen Schultz. Kelly and friends slam their local favorites into the boards occasionally. Naturally, such sights enrage the home customers, but there is no doubt the Flyers’ hitting style is partly responsible for their successful road record. At…

WHERE YOUR OPINION COUNTS FAN FORUM

Rangers Should Hang Onto McDuffe As Ranger fan for many years, I have finally come to the conclusion that Eddie Giacomin is no longer the ‘iron’ man he was three years ago. I think the Rangers will be making serious mistake if they allow a fine young goaler like Peter McDuffe to be drafted away in this year’s expansion draft. Peter has proven in his few appearances this season that he is an NHL-quality goaltender. I just hope that Emile Francis will not continue to trade away all the young players in his yearly hope that he can win the Stanley Cup. It is time that the Rangers start building for the future and a good way to start will be by keeping McDuffe. BRUCE BARNES, Washington, D.C. Boston Fans Display Anger With Bottles I’ve just…

Quinn May Be Forced Into ‘Tough Guy’ Role Again

ATLANTA— A subtle change has come over Pat Quinn, the big Irishman who always seemed to be brawling with somebody about something. Instead of dropping his gloves. swinging his stick or using his elbows freely. Quinn spent the first half of this hockey season working on the technical aspect of playing defense. Fights? blast against Philadelphia in an exhibition game was about the closest thing that approached his style. Gone are the raucous, adrenalin-pumping melees. Even in front of the net. he was forced to admit, his ferocity had dwindled. But. now that “hands-off” policy is over, Mr. Quinn vowed a few days ago. “I’m going to get back to my old style a little more.” he said. “I haven’t been rough enough. “It was a concious thing. I had been taught to cross…

Red Wings Headed For Galt Or Brantford

HAMILTON— It looks like a lost cause in Hamilton not only this year but next as well. Owner Nick Durbano is definitely deciding to move if he can find a proper location as fans are just not turning on at the ancient Forum. Durbano will transfer some games late in this season’s schedule to Niagara Falls and Galt (now pail of Cambridge. Ont.) but would like to get into Brantford. However, the Senior A Foresters have the rights to the Brantford arena and the best bet is that he’ll move to Galt where the building is old but has a capacity of about 4,000. Red Wings have little hope of making the playoffs and fans apparently couldn’t care less although Nick has poured thousands of dollars into the franchise to keep it going. Not…
