Isles Rate Marshall Blue-Chip Acquisition Giving Defense Depth

LONG ISLAND — After playing most of his career with losing teams, Bert Marshall finally figured he had it made late last year when he was obtained by the New York Rangers. It seemed the Broadway Blueshirts were in a defensive pinch and could welcome his veteran talents. Unfortunately, Bert’s career with a playoff team was short-lived. Unfortunate, that is, for the Rangers, who seem to have a noticable lack of defensive help these days. The Islanders knew they would be in a position to draft a player of major league calibre from the Rangers at last year’s annual meetings, but most people thought that general manager Bill Torrey would select forward Bobby Rousseau. The belief was that with Rousseau setting up young Billy Harris, last year’s third-best rookie in the NHL would…

Bathgate Wants His Blazers In Better Playing Condition

VANCOUVER— Lack of proper conditioning is a major reason Vancouver Blazers are not holding a playoff spot in the WHA West. This view from coach Andy Bathgate. who has a program underway to correct the problem. Blazers suffered an unusually high number of injuries this season. Bathgate believes several were the-result of players not being in shape. He also says Blazers have “got to toughen up” in their play, and the conditioning program will help. Bathgate has been putting Blazers through stiff warmup exercises and running before practices. The exercise sessions are also held during road trips when Blazers can’t get ice for practices. Meantime. Blazers owner jimmy Pattison is busy fighting Seattle Totems’ three-year exclusivity clause on use of the Seattle Center Coliseum, not because he has any thought of moving Blazers, but because he…

Penguins Retain Rutherford Despite Trade Winds

PITTSBURGH— Jimmy Rutherford is alive and well in Pittsburgh. Rumors that the pintsized netminder was packing his bags and headed for another stop were vastly exaggerated and proved to be incorrect when Rutherford stepped into the lineup and allowed only four goals in three games. Trade talks began when the club went on a four road trip and left goalie Denis Herron at home, while Andy Brown got the call in the first game in Chicago heartbreaking 2-1 loss with 11 seconds left). Herron then rejoined the team on the West Coast and Rutherford was relegated to the sidelines as Brown played against Los Angeles and Vancouver and Herron took on California. Upon returning to Pittsburgh, Schinkel decided to end the three-goalie system by sending Herron out on loan to Salt Lake…
