Hockey Ad Lib

Of Trades And Players… RECENTLY, EMILE ERANCIS, general manager of the New York Rangers, referring to talk of trades around his team. said. “All those rumors about trades we’re supposed to make are nothing but baloney. Just a lot of sensational headlines. Trades aren’t always an answer to your problems. A shake-up? Heck, no. Not as long as I’m around. I don’t believe in panic.” Whereupon he traded Mike Murphy, Tom Williams and Sheldon Kannegeisser to Los Angeles for Gilles Marotte and Real Lemieux. They prospered without winning any scoring championships or becoming known as a powerhouse. The name of their unspectacular game was defense — keeping the goals-against down to 180 or fewer each 70-game season. Management and coaching personel has changed almost completely since then, but it’s significant that the people now running the team were involved back in the glory days. General manager Jim Gregory managed and coached Leafs’ junior team, Toronto Marlboros, and coach Leonard Kelly played for Leafs. It’s no wonder, then, that the current team is developing in the direction which worked in the past. Gregory and Kelly, 10 years later, are looking at Leafs’ weaknesses and strengths…

COMMACK— There have been a few transactions made this season in the NA HL but a recent deal between Broome Dusters and Mohawk Valley Comets could prove to be one of the most significant ones.
