Phoenix Pursuing Scoring Record

PHOENIX— When Leo Thiffault scored with just 14 seconds left in the game which the Phoenix Roadrunners lost 3-1 to the Denver Spurs in Denver, it kept alive the Roadrunners’ pursuit of a Western Hockey League record. It marked the I05th regular season game the Roadrunners have scored at least one goal. The WHL record is 133, set by the Salt Lake Golden Eagles last season. The Eagles’ string was ended by a 7-0 setback by the Dallas Black Hawks in an interlocking schedule game with the Central Hockey League team. The two leagues are no longer playing an interlocking schedule. The Roadrunners, felt coach Sandy Hucul, outplayed and even outbrawled the brawling Spurs in that Mile High City loss, but just couldn’t find a chink in goaltender Bill Yeo’s armer. AROUND THE WHA

Newest Shark Bares Teeth LOS ANGELES SHARKS have to gain from the transaction bringing them Ron Ward, late of the Vancouver Blazers. Ward, who finished second to Andre Lacroix in the scoring race in the World Hockey Association last year, just didn’t fit in with Phil Watson’s plans in Vancouver. In six games he had two assists for the Blazers. “Watson didn’t even talk to me,” complained Ward, after debuting at Madison Square Garden against his old teammates, the New York Golden Blades. “I came to camp in top shape but got the flu and had to spend five days in the hospital. He never really played me regularly and always with different people. I guess he doesn’t like guys who have a reputation for speaking their piece. I don’t question his…

DETROIT— Doug Grant had no idea when he was going to Memorial University in Newfoundland that he’d ever play pro hockey let alone be a No. 1 man in the National Hockey League. But there he was, two weeks into the season, the “veteran” goalkeeper for the Detroit Red Wings… with one year of professional experience behind him. “Yes, I’m very surpassed.” the handsome 6-foot-l. 200-pounder said, “surprised I’m with the team this season and surprised at this.” Suddenly, when Roy Edwards packed up and went home to Caledonia, Ont., near Hamilton, the 25-year-old Grant became the Wings’ No. 1 man between the pipes with 20-year-old Terry Richardson, the club’s first choice in the amateur draft last summer, thrust into the backup role. The Wings, who planned to be a contender for a…
