Security Helps Price Recover From Surgery
ATLANTA— Alternating between selt-pre-servation and althruism, Noel Price has begun his 18th season of professional hockey with renewed vigor. Coming back from knee surgery at age 37 requires a rather special determination. For Price, the stimulant is knowing he finally has “made it.” No more bouncing from Los Angeles to Springfield to Nova Scotia in a matter of months: no more half-seasons anywhere. His position as a defenseman with the Atlanta Flames is secure. The only suspicion was whether or not he successfully could recover from cartilage damage in his susceptible right knee. “I was very pessimistic after the operation last March 26,” Price said recently. “It was the third time that knee had been injured, and there’s only so much elastic left in these old joints. “To have an operation at my age and…

Gilbert’s Stay In Ranger Doghouse Brief; Murphy, Carr Show Signs Of Improvement
NEW YORK— After two opening victories. 4-1 over the Detroit Red Wings and 8-2 over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Larry Popein, the Rangers new coach dropped a bombshell when he did not, dress right wing star Rod Gilbert for the game with Los Angeles on Octobert 14. “It was not disciplinary,” said Popein. “It was my reason. Ron Gilbert is still the property of the New York Rangers.” But Gilbert was back in the lineup for the next game against St. Louis and scored his 271st career goal as a Ranger to put him within one of tying the club record of 272 held by Andy Bathgate. The hard-skating Gilbert, a Ranger since 1961-62, apparently missed a pre-game meeting and was benched by Popein. “I wasn’t hurt. It was a discipline thing just…

Kelly Seeking More Punch After Checkers Drop Pair
CHARLOTTE— After the opening weekend of the Southern Hockey League’s first season there was only one winless team. the Charlotte Checkers. But General Manager-Coach Pat Kelly, a veteran mentor who has guided more than his share of teams to the top, was not discouraged. For one thing, the Checkers dropped both of their first two games to Roanoke Valley, the preseason favorite to capture the first Tedd Munchak Cup, symbolic of SHL supremacy. The scores were 4-2 and 3-0. “We’ll come around.” promised Kelly. “We’re only about two players away from having a good hockey team. I’m confident we’ll jell. “We’re just not scoring goals,” he added. “We had over 80 shots in our two first games and scored just two goals. We had a lot of good opportunities, but the puck refused…
