New WCHL Head Cracks Down After Exhibition Donnybrook
SASKATOON— When Ed Chynoweth joined the executive staff of the Western Canada Hockey League midway through the 1972-73 season, he was expected to become the resident trouble shooter. Chynoweth, then known as the assistant to the executive secretary. was stern in his warnings to WCHL clubs about excessive brawling and rough play. But in no way did he rule with an iron hand. This season, though, Chynoweth holds the president’s reins at the league head office here in Saskatoon. And it didn’t take him long to don his six guns…just one exhibition game to be exact. Government Should Back Colleges Lately the demand for Canadian hockey players to staff U.S. college hockey teams has been so overwhelming that it has wiped out any Canadian competition. Each year, hundreds of good Canadian junior players choose to go south for an education. The reason is that the rich American colleges can afford to give out 20 hockey scholarships whereas Canadian schools just don’t have that kind of money. The few scholarships Canadian schools do have to offer come from Hockey Canada and in no way match the lucrative U.S. offers. It is high time for the Canadian Government to step in and give financial aid to Canadian colleges to allow them to compete on an equal basis with their American counterparts.
