Kids Have Geoffrion Beaming With Optimism
ATLANTA— The prevailing attitude in the Atlanta Flames’ training camp is one of extreme optimism. The Flames opened their exhibition season with a 2-0 victory over Toronto, followed by a 4-4 tie with the New York Islanders, and then beat Buffalo, 4-3. Normally, that would be enough to make any team happy. But the Flames were especially pleased because several key players were sitting in the stands, during those last two games. “This is just an exhibition game. Our main concern is looking at our young players,” general manager Cliff Fletcher said before the game against Buffalo in St. Catharines. “We’ve got to find out which ones can help us right now and which ones are going to help us in the future.” That night, the Flames’ most impressive line during training camp, Curt Bennett,…

NHL Rivals Won’t Kick Sand In Canucks’ Faces This Year
VANCOUVER— Since they arrived in the league three years ago, rival National Hockey League teams have seldom found defeating the Vancouver Canucks an insurmountable problem. Witness the record: Sixth in a seven team division, seventh in a seven team division and seventh in an eight team division. Now, as they prepare to stride over the threshold of Year Four, the Canucks still appear short of playoff calibre, but opposing coaches may have to do some rethinking in the strategy department. Last year virtually every team employed the same game plan, varied only by the calibre of its own personnel. The plan was simple. Hit. When conscientiously applied, it was almost invariably successful. Vancouver had the smallest collection of forwards in either division and. in a totally disruptive season, the few big guys around…

Economics, Parity, Immediate Franchise All Factors In Roadrunners Joining WHA
PHOENIX— The World Hockey Association offers “major league” hockey to Phoenix nex season. The National Hockey League offered an expansion franchise in three, five or seven years—or not at all. And a competitive team, under the handicap of little sharing of talent in the NHL expansion draft, after five or 10 years of supporting losers. Jim Wells president and general manager of the Phoenix Roadrunners, cited the possibility of “being competitive right from the start,” as one of the advantages of joining the WHA instead of waiting for an NHL franchise that might never come. “Besides,” said Wells, “it’s always nice to be wanted. There’s no doubt in any of our minds that we eventually would have been given an NHL franchise, but the WHA wanted us now, not three, five or seven years…
