Too Much McDonald, Lysiak As Mad Hatters Win It All
MEDICINE HAT— The Medicine Hat Tigers, courtesy of their own version of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, are the new champions of the Western Canada Hockey League. With Tom Lysiak and Lanny McDonald leading the way, Tigers eliminated the Saskatoon Blades in five games in the league’s best-of-seven final. Labelled as the underdogs against the eastern champion Blades, the rough-tough Mad Hatters captured the crown with three straight victories, two of them right in Saskatoon’s own backyard. The first two games of the series were tied in Medicine Hat. It appeared as though the Blades had stolen the advantage … But then Lysiak and McDonald rolled out their artillery. Tigers turned the series around with a convincing 6-3 triumph in Saskatoon, as they built up an early 5-0 lead over the stunned Blades.…
Richard Sets Playoff Mark
MONTREAL— Henri Richard, the captain of the Canadiens, recently set a NHL Stanley Cup playoff record when he appeared in his 165th post-season game. Richard had entered the playoffs with 151 games played. He trailed three retired players. Red Kelly, who led with 164, Jean Beliveau 162 and Gordie Howe 154. It was broken in seven places … Pierre Bouchard and Larry Robinson have seen plenty of…

Rangers Expected To Unload Some ‘Stars’
NEW YORK— With the demise of the New York Rangers in the semi-final round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, scuttlebutt swirled around the head of Emile Francis, the Rangers general manager-coach. “I expect to remain as general manager-coach next season” said Francis the day after the final game in Chicago. “When you have been knocked down you just get up and start working again.” Madison Square Garden higher ups, including Ranger Board Chairman Irving Mitchell Felt and president Bill Jennings have the highest faith in Francis, who is also listed as a vice president. One insider noted, “Without Francis this team was nothing. He has made the playoffs seven years in a row, more than anyone else in the NHL.” Nonetheless, the players, fans and brass were disappointed in the 1972-73 season. It was to be…
