Pronovost Spurned Offer From Brother To Sign Pens’ Pact
PITTSBURGH— Pittsburgh has come between two brothers, but few Penguin fans are crying about it. A mild, pleasant surprise hit Pittsburgh hockey fans recently when Jean Pronovost became the first Penguin to sign a new contract as Marcel Pronovost, his brother, happens to be the coach of the Chicago Cougars in the World Hockey Association and the same Cougars happen to hold his negotiation rights and wanted him for the WHA. Pronovost was the first of two Penguin players to sign multi-year contracts since the season closed. Defenseman Darryl Edestrand was the second. General manager Jack Riley said Edestrand had agreed to terms and would be back for his third season with the club. Edestrand in his first year with the Pens set new club records for goals (10) and points (33) by a…

Canucks Push Prices To Meet Rising Player Demands
VANCOUVER— At long last the Vancouver Canucks have issued a positive statement. Their fans will positively have to pay more money to watch their favorite National Hockey League team in action next season. Mind you, those fans still don’t know who will be coaching the team; who will be directing its fortunes from the general manager’s office; or, in some cases, even who will be playing for it. Presumably, however, it will all be worth $273,000 more than than it was a year ago. Prices on 13,000 seats in the 15,570 — seat Pacific Coliseum were raised 50 cents apiece — from $6.50to$7 and from $5 to $5.50 — or a total of $273,000 over 39 league and three exhibition games. Hal Laycoe, the Canucks’ interim general manager, termed the increased “entirely logical” in…

Phoenix Captures First Patrick Cup Title
PHOENIX— The Phoenix Roadrunners came through to win their first ever Patrick Cup as they swept past the young Salt Lake Golden Eagles without faltering. Sandy Hucul’s veteran Runners outclassed the younger Eagles taking the best-of-seven Western Hockey League final series in four straight games. It marked the first time a Phoenix team had won the cup, which is a tribute to the coaching magic of Hucul a former WHL defense star who is carving his niche as a professional hockey coach. Phoenix won 5-3, 4-3, 4-3 and 64 with the windup game on home ice. Seasoned pros Andre Hinse and Wayne Hicks each chipped in with a pair of goals in the deciding game as the Roadrunners outgunned the Eagles 19-13 in the four games to complete a season double after winning the…
