Jack sonville Gets Barons For All Time

JACKSONVILLE— Nick Mileti has decided after all to take his Barons back to Jacksonville next season. The owner of the nomadic Barons said his club will stay in the Florida city to where they moved in mid-season during the 1972-73 campaign after attendance sagged badly in Cleveland. Mileti said the team will serve as a farm club for his Cleveland Crusaders of the WHA. Mileti said he is in the process of signing a long-term lease to play at the Jacksonville Coliseum. The Barons have nowhere to go but up next season. They have just completed another sub-par year and missed the playoffs. The team won only 23 games. That was the same as in 1969-70 and the fewest since 1942-43 when Cleveland won 21 of a 56-game schedule. The 44 losses were the most in…

Garvin Doesn’t Take Kindly To Losing

DETROIT — Fiery Ted Garvin would rather fight than change. That’s the way the blocky new coach of the Detroit Red Wings looks at the hockey world and if there’s one thing that rankles the 52-year-old Garvin it’s losing hockey games. The Detroit club announced that Garvin was their choice to step up from Port Huron Wings of the International Hockey League to take over the head coaching post with the NHL Red Wings as successor to John Wilson. Garvin is a colorful individual who has been in hot water many times with referees in the IHL where he had become a coaching legend in his five years winning titles in 1971 and 1972 and never finishing out of the playoffs in his coaching career. Aside from being a coaching firebrand, Garvin is also…

Canadiens Overpowering in Cup Final

STANLEY CUP ’73 MONTREAL— The Chicago Black Hawks were reeling from a first-game Stanley Cup final defeat that left them shaking their heads and asking pointedly, “what happened?”. The Hawks were attempting to pick up the pieces after the overpowering Montreal Canadiens skated through, around and over them to the tune of 8-3 in the first game of their best-of-seven final series to determine to holder of Lord Stanley’s storied hockey pewter. It was a case of too much power on the Montreal side of the ledger and too little defense on the part of the Black Hawks, who had entered the cup final brimming with a defensive record that had the New York Rangers muttering in their beer after the semi-final series had slipped through their fingers. The Hawks were seemingly impregnable against the…
