NHL WEEK — In Review
There are only two weeks left in the 1972-73 National Hockey League’s regular schedule, the busiest ever with a total 624 games. But much remains to be decided during the final 49 games, such as: Second place in the East Division (Boston leads Rangers by two points); fourth place in the East (Detroit and Buffalo are tied but Wings have a game more to play); second place in the West (Minnesota leads Philadelphia by two points); the fourth playoff berth in the West (St. Louis has a four-point lead over Los Angeles and a seven-point lead over Pittsburgh and Atlanta). Portland Faces Elimination For First Time
PORTLAND A hockey dynasty is dying. The Portland Buckaroos look like a sure bet to miss the Western Hockey League playoffs for the first time in their 13-year history. With 14 games remaining, the Buckaroos are nine points behind the fourth-place Denver Spurs. They are tied for fifth with the Seattle Totems. Portland is faced with having to play nine of its last 12 games on the road and the Bucks own an unenviable 2-19-6 road mark. The Buckaroos, until last season’s third-place finish, had never been worse than second and had finished first eight times. Their fortunes have plummeted so far that the WHL had to guarantee the Buckaroos this season would meet their financial obligations. The financially-troubled Bucks are for sale. WHL president Bill MacFarland speculated that the once proud Buckaroos would be taken over by…
Canucks Ink Guevremont for 3 years
Jocelyn Guevremont, the Vancouver Canucks’ first amateur draft pick two years ago, has signed a three-year contract with the NHL club, it was announced by vice-president Hal Laycoe. The 6’ 2”, 180-pound defenceman ended speculation that he was planning to jump to the World Hockey Association with the statement: “Vancouver is a wonderful city and it’s where I plan to make my future. I’m very happy with the terms of the contract and my only hope now is that I can help the Canucks become a playoff contender.” Guevremont was selected in the 1971 amateur draft following a brilliant career with the Montreal Junior Canadiens. In his rookie season with the Canucks he collected 51 points - 13 goals and 38 assists.…
