Big League Scouts Drooling Over Top Three WCHL Centers

REGINA— So you think you’ve got problems. Well… check over in the Western Canada Hockey League’s Eastern Division briar patch. Professional hockey scouts have enough problems separating the top 19-year olds in the country from the also-eligibles. But out west, their train of thought has been further interrupted by three 18-year-old centers, who could make almost any big-time club in the country right now. Dennis Sobchuk of Regina Pats, Ron Chipperfield of Brandon Wheat Kings and Bob Bourne of Saskatoon Blades are the three youngsters who have it made, even though they still have one season of junior eligibility remaining. Lagace Recall Helps Brighten Penguins’ Dark Defense Picture

PITTSBURGH— When Bryan Watson suffered a knee injury and was going to be out for almost three weeks, things looked pretty dim for the Penguins. They had been having trouble at right defense already, with Duane Rupp struggling and Jack Lynch making a flurry of mistakes. And the Penguins had repeatedly stated they had no one in Hershey to help them. But then an unknown minor league traveller named Jean Guy Iagace came to the rescue. To replace the aggressive Watson, the Penguins got a hitterfrom Hershey. The Penguins had to use Lagace right away and when he was inserted into the lineup against Los Angeles he was superb. He started pounding right away and showed he was underrated as a puck handler. The next night in Detroit, he played one of the…

FAN FORUM

Wealthy Teams Should Keep Their Players In response to a Fan Forum letter of Nov. 10 about spreading talent to weaker clubs, I disagree. I feel that the owners who spend their money to buy players, thus creating farm clubs, should not be told to give up this accumulated property to other NHL teams. The owners who put money into developing players deserve to hang onto the resulting product. There is no way they should have to give up anything. DEL GUNDRY,Flint, Mich. Flyer Draft Choices Mould Ice Dynasty The headlines read “Flyers Capture First Place”. Even though it didn’t last long, first place will become a common habitat for the Flyers in the near future. They are on the verge of dominating the NHL’s West Division. While other expansion teams were busily trading away…
