Islanders Not Bruins THEY COME OFF THE ICE after the game, tall on their skates, walking clumsily on the carpet that leads to the dressing room and their faces are drawn tight and nearly expressionless and they are not speaking, even to each other, and it is silent in the corridor there in the guts of the arena except for the clomping sound their metal skates make on the rug stretched over the concrete floor. They go into the dressing room and they sit on their stools in front of their open cubicles and they do not say anything for awhile. They sit in their sweat and their soggy uniforms and their disappointment and look at the floor instead of at one another and then after awhile they begin to undress…

Goalie’s Poke Check The poke check should be used only when an attacker is coming in on you from an angle. If he’s coming right down the slot, he has more options than if coming in from the side, so the goalie shouldn’t commit himself first. By deciding to poke check, you’re gambling you can break up the attack, so make sure you have the odds with you. The timing is important. If you come out too early, you’re extended like an octopus, with the whole top oft he net wide open. Be sure you poke the puck straight up the ice. not to a side where it could be picked off by another attacker coming in. As you come out of the crease, drop the knee of the back leg to help…

• BUFFALO FANS highly incensed, and rightly so, because Gil Perreault was left off the NHL Eastern Division All Stars. It was an insult to both Perreault, who ranks as one of the four or five best forwards in the league, and to the loyal fans of Buffalo. Several letters have reached us complaining about this gross injustice.
