Hockey Names Should Have More Meaning Hockey teams should have nicknames with significant meaning. I wonder who picked names like Islanders and Flames? From a ‘name that team contest’? For some reason, these names do not sound quite right for a pro hockey team. Perhaps this is because older NHL clubs got all the best names already. For New York Islanders, I would have preferred Americans, Amerks, Nets, Avengers or Chargers. Team nicknames do not seem to be the outright property of one club (Texas in baseball copied Rangers from the NHL New York squad), so Islanders should have ‘borrowed’ Nets from the ABA. Late Starter Dionne Beginning To Bloom For Wings
DETROIT— Red Wing General Manager Ned Harkness stuck his hand through a small knot” of writers talking to Marcel Dionne. Harkness had a big smile on his face as he shook hands and said “Nice going, Marcel.” “When you win,” Dionne said, as Harkness moved down the dressing room, “they all want to shake hands.” . Dionne’s observation proved a couple of points: (1) is percepive beyond his 21 years, and (2) he isn’t afraid of the boss.
