Player’s of the week
In The East It takes more than four games to win the Vezina Trophy but goaler Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens certainly has a head start on the rest of the National Hockey League netminders. Dryden posted his second shutout in four games last week as he blanked the Atlanta Flames 3-0. It followed a similar 3-0 game-opening whitewashing of the Minnesota North Stars. In four games, Dryden has allowed a meagre three goals for a fantastic 0.75 goals-against average. The Canadiens are off and flying in their 1972-73 schedule without a loss and much of the credit belongs to Dryden, who has turned in four superb goaling performances to help put the Montrealers right up with the East Division leaders. Canada Does It But What Did They Do? Canada does it? Does what? Barely got by the Russian National team. A few weeks ago we read in THE HOCKE’ NEWS that “anything less than eight straight will be a loss.” Any team that goes 4-3-1 in straight game series does not “vanquish” his opponent but rather it shows an evenly-matched series where one team was lucky. I guess the most impressive and stirring moment of the series was Canada’s win in the final seconds of Game Eight. After all. who can forget the professionalism of Team Canada standing on the bench giving the Italian salute to the Moscovites. Just imagine the scorn and indignation that would have befallen the Russian team if Petrov. Mikhailov or any other Russian pulled the same…
