First-place Finishers Victimized Six Times In Last 10 Years Bidding For Stanley Cup
MONTREAL— You’ve often heard it said that the playoffs represent a brand new season. Believe it. More often than not—in fact, in six of the last 10 years—the team that finished first during the regular season failed to win the Stanley Cup. Upsets have been the order of the day, and never was that more clearly demonstrated than during last spring’s playoffs when the mighty Boston Bruins were ousted by the Montreal Canadiens. After having swept through the opposition during the regular schedule, Boston was regarded as a cinch to take the Stanley Cup. Instead, they were belted out of contention in the quarter-finals by a team which had finished 24 points behind them in regular season play. Or, how about the playoffs following the 1966-67 season?
