Massachusetts Wins Division II Honors

BOSTON— The University of Massachusetts, second seeded for the first ECAC Division Two playoff involving eight teams, wrapped up the crown with an 8-1 smothering of surprising sixth-seeded Buffalo in Amherst College’s Orr Rink that night of March 11. The Redmen, under coach Jack Canniff, got a two-goal effort from senior Eric Scrafield and fine goaltending from senior P.J. Flaherty. Massachusetts had made it to the finals with home ice by dumping Merrimack 4-2 the previous Wednesday while Buffalo, under second-year coach Eddie Wright, was pulling a titanic 4-0 upset over top-seeded Vermont at Burlington. Two goals by Dale Dolmage and a 56-save game by goalie Mike Dunn powered the Bulls to the triumph.…

Gary Veneruzzo of the Denver Spurs came up with a six-point week to lead all WHL marksmen but more important was the fact he extended his consecutive game scoring streak to 10 games to claim a 17-year-old league record. Veneruzzo counted four goals giving him 30 in 59 games for the Spurs.…
