OAKLAND— It was a dubious debut for Gary Kurt. He looked across the dressing room at a set of unused goalie pads and shook his head. “I thought he’d be here,” said Kurt, who opened this season for the California Golden Seals in a disappointing 4-4 tie. There were few who did not sympathize with Kurt, plucked in the inter-league draft last summer from the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League. The Seals needed a second goalie to complement Gary Smith, who toiled through 71 games the previous season and Kurt was a logical choice after a banner year in the AHL. But Kurt wouldn’t be the back-up to Gary Smith. Smitty was dealt to Chicago for three players, including goalie Gerry Desjardins. Well, that was okay with Kurt. Now he’d be the backup to…

A four-game winning streak, climaxed by a 5-3 home triumph over league-leading Dallas, Mar. 8, pulled the OC crew to within six points of second-place Tulsa. Gary Veneruzzo of the Denver Spurs came up with a six-point week to lead all WHL marksmen but more important was the fact he extended his consecutive game scoring streak to 10 games to claim a 17-year-old league record. Veneruzzo counted four goals giving him 30 in 59 games for the Spurs.…
