Kings Set For AHL’s Final Run

SPRINGFIELD— Sink or swim, the Springfield Kings will go the rest of the way with the players they have on their roster, which numbers 19 plus two goalers. The club has been doing well with what they have. In fact they have played at a much better pace than last year when they barely squeezed into the playoffs after a postseason one game playoff with Quebec. At the moment, the old veteran Ed Hoekstra is playing the finest hockey of his career at 45 with the Kings. He has found a new life in the game with 15 goals and 58 assists. Another top veteran with 41 goals and leading the league in that department, Wayne Rivers is playing his best hockey in a 10-year career. He is a cinch to break the…

Pace Setting Braves Back On Warpath

BOSTON— After suffering through a midseason victory famine on the road, Bep Guidolin’s rejuvenated Braves have steamrolled over all opponents—both home and way—in recent weeks. We went something like nine or 10 games in a row without a win on the road, and we were…

Marlboros’ Awesome Power Surpassed 1967 Cup Team

TORONTO— To paraphrase the old saying: “It’s not whether the Marlboros win or lose but how many goals they score a game.” The powerful Toronto club continued its relentless charge towards the Ontario Hockey Association Major Junior A pennant with awesome scoring strength and with less than two weeks to play in the schedule were assured first place in the 10-team standings for the first time since 1967 when they went on to win the Memorial Cup. In recent weeks Marlboro opponents have been fortunate if they escape without the Toronto club reaching double figures. During a 21-game stretch the Marlboros were beaten only once and their victories included a 14-3 thrashing of the defending champion St. Catharines Black Hawks and an almost equally-impressive 12-5 win over second place Oshawa Generals. The Generals had led…
