DENVER— Bob Nuell, vice-president of operations for the Denver Spurs, has promised himself he’ll try to contain his enthusiasm from now on at Western Hockey League games. When Jim Shires scored for the league leading Spurs in a recent game at Denver to send the Spurs into a lead they never relinquished in a battle with second place Phoenix, Nuell’s joy was unconfined. Richard Still Key Figure Despite Lack Of Goals
MONTREAL— He had 10 goals after 62 games and was far from happy about it, but little Henri Richard was still doing a good job for Canadiens. “He still controls that puck as well as ever,” said coach Scotty Bowman, “and, he can skate with the best of them. His play contributes to our defensive strength, and that’s important.” Richard, not surprisingly, has a tendency to judge himself on the basis of goals scored. After all, that was the family business for a good many years. When he judges himself that way he becomes dissatisfied, and gets down about it. Young Figures Trade Will Assure Seals Of Spot In Playoffs
OAKLAND— “This trade will put us in the playoffs,” said Garry Young, general manager of the California Golden Seals. And for a little over 30 minutes of actual playing time against the Boston Bruins, there were plenty of believers in the Alameda County Coliseum Arena In Oakland. The Golden Ones were ahead of Boston 6-1 and newcomers Rick Smith, Reggie Leach and Bob Stewart were impressing the first turnaway crowd of the season in the Bay Area. But leads for the youngest team in the National Hockey League have been hard to protect this year.
